Hello,

Presented is a VERY odd police eagle for your consideration. At first glance it appears to be your standard run of the mill Feuerwehr eagle. But wait. It has a black swastika, very unusual. And it is embroidered in wine red as would be used by the Schupo d. Gemeinde rather than the expected pink-carmine. And finally as if those two oddities were not enough, it is on a BLACK, not dark navy blue wool oval. I have compared it to ever Feuerwehr eagle I have, and this is the only eagle on a black base.

Now, Dave and Gary have examples of this pattern of eagle that show honest wear and signs of having been used, and it is assumed at this point that the eagle is an orignal period piece.

That said, absent any alternative uses (Gempo armored?) this is a prime example of why the "rules" are only useful to a very limited extent when examining police relics. Once again it appears that a local insignia manufacturer has winked....no closed his eyes.....at the regulations and produced a bird that is totally different from what was specified in those regulations. Why, saving time not changing thread during a production run, maybe no navy blue ovals available, didn't change pattern to all one color........who knows.

If anyone else has examples of this pattern of eagle I would enjoy seeing them.

Regards,
William Unland
