Hello Bob, the buckle issued for tropical areas bears a different paint, stronger than the standard one. That said, many collectors/dealers still base their belief on the colour shade not the kind of paint. In short, yours is not a tropical buckle. Best Ric

the colour is not the best way to identify a DAK buckle.
the most i know are standard buckles with standard laque...but with a canvas strap. without a strap... no chance to identify.
this buckles not only were used in africa...this was equipement for the whole sothern front... including italy and south russia.
also buckles with normal paint and leather strap were used in the Afrika corps.
