I'm usually in the 'let it be' crowd. But... Age was kind to the fittings, not so much to the blade of this one, and it has some rather serious blade problems. And it's rare. Is there anything that can be done?

It appears the blade is plated. The plating would have to be stripped, the blade polished/ground to remove imperfections and replated. The tm would have to be carefully preserved in doing such. Most modern plating has a different "look" than that found on original blades. A tough call, to be sure. Finding a "dog" dagger with a decent blade is one way to go, using the blade as a replacement (considered "heresy" by some). Another option is leaving the blade as is and learning to live with it.

I would say "let it be" a rare maker for sure.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure the blade isn't plated though. (I haven't had it out for a while and don't have it here to check, however.)

But, I was afraid there probably wasn't much that could be done. And I've managed to live with it so far. Oh well, It looks good in the scabbard at least!

Tyrel,

Strangely enough, I have the exact same dagger with the exact same problem!! Your blade would definately be plated, just like mine. This maker was known to plate.

Make that 3. I have one too, flawless other than the blade which I have often thought of getting re-plated. Balloonmen as far as I am aware were always plated.

I've had once the Christianswerk early Army dagger with pitting on the blade - also around the fork logo.
Vern has restored it to amazing condition and logo remained untouched - have no idea how he did it!
