In reading W's book I see many photos of serrated tail Eickorn SS small oval daggers.
My SS Rohm is a small oval smooth tail. I note only one photo in his book with this variation.
Does this mean they are fewer and therefore more rare than the serrated?

Thanks,
Mike

IMO: This is due to the scarcity of full Rohm SS daggers. They smooth and serrated Eickhorns seem to be faily evenly distributed in the Himmler SS examples which are far more common.

Thanks for the reply Jim. Please be patient with my learning curve - are you saying that Rohms were made with both makers marks but due to the coincidence of small numbers, the few (including the Grounds & Partials) the exist today are mostly serrated?

Both Rohm and Himmler honor daggers were made by Eickhorn using either smooth or serrated tail logos. However; Since Rohm was murdered on Hitlers order after "The night of the long knifes" most of the dedications were ground off the blades in conformance with the July 1934 decree. That made Rolm daggers with the inscription intact very scarce.

The serrated tail is most likely an Eickhorn in house produce blade. In order to keep up with the demand of both the Rohm and Himmler daggers, along with their other blade production, the ones trademarked with the smooth tail logo most likely was a sub-contract produced blade for Eickhorn. This can be clearly shown by comparing the etch of the motto on their 1st production run SS daggers that has the large oval logo, to that of the etch of the serrated tail logo dagger. They are the same. The motto on the smooth tail squirrel has some different characteristics Another possibility is 2 different templates in house. Wink

Another distinguishing feature is that the serrated tail logo daggers usually have the H E crossguards while the smooth tail examples generally have A R crossguards. To the best of my knowledge neither of these casters has ever been identified. Both types again are usually "benchmarked" between 1 and 9 on the underside of the lower crossguard.

Absolutely on track with my Rohm. It has the smooth tail and A R crossguards.

I've had the crossguard combination of HE and AR both with the serrated tail squirrel and the smooth tail squirrel logos. And have even had get this........... the Large Oval 1st type logo, with one HE guard and one AR guard!

Unless changed by owners (grips maybe crossguards more doubtful) then the factory used what it had I guess.

JR would that also be true on other early Eickhorn blades, like this one on a DLV I have? Cool

I believe the "different template" explanation to be the correct one. Also the "zero" is a correct assembly/benchmark number for these daggers.
