Hi. I was wondering if there is any interest in a possible get togehter for the Ontario based collector's to sit down, break bread and have a little show and tell.
The internet database group here is a wonderfull and time efficient means of communication. That being said, just checking if some old style sit down and talking would interest anyone at all. This could become a bi-annual event if we hit it off.
ALL ideas open.
I can offer free parking at a downtown Toronto location, and very possibly a secure and private room in a fairly adjacent restaurant (walking distance). Food needs, (omg bbq sauce on my allgemeine visor! you ___!) if warranted can be discussed as well.
The above is one of my ideas...I'm open to leaving the central core of Toronto as well.
In closing, it would be nice to meet you all.

Regards
Dale

Hi Dale,

That sounds like a wonderful idea and to tell you the truth, it has been discussed by some of us Toronto area collectors in the past. Unfortunately it has never come to fruition.

Please count me in and I know there are others who would be willing to give it a go. Derek Chapman emailed to ask me to let you know that he is also very keen to do this. As with most of the more knowledgeable and respected collector/historians on this forum, he has been suspended and likely will not return...even if asked. It's a shame really and makes me once again contemplate my own continued membership.

By the way...sorry for not being at home when you last called.

Cheers,

Darryl

Ryan,

That is very generous of you. I guess all it takes is to come up with a date and time that is suitable for most of us. Perhaps we should have a show of hands as to who would be willing to take part? Sounds like there are about five so far...Dale, Derek, Ryan, myself and my friend Frank. Oh yes, another good friend, Pedro would also join in...so the number is up to six.

Thanks for the gloves info. I was beginning to wonder.

Cheers,

Darryl

Derek Chapman posted a sales ad without having a Premium Membership and changed the "Display Email" in his profile to "xxxxxxxxxxxx". This was reported to me by two members.

I removed the ad, which is no big deal, and I emailed him requesting that he change back his profile "Display Email" to a functioning email address. After 2-3 days with no answer and no change to the profile, I suspended his account.

Whenever I find - or have reported to me - a member without a functioning display email I do the same thing. Most guys change it themselves or email me to do it for them.

All that has to happen is for Derek to email me and give me a working email address to put in his profile.

Dave

Thanks for the explanation Dave. Sounds reasonable enough and hopefully this was conveyed to Derek in the same manner. He is a stalwart chap and a true asset to any forum lucky enough to have him as a member. I don't want to blow smoke up his but but the knowledge that he possess and offers so freely is more valueable than many of our reference libraries. It would be a shame to loose him due to a perceived slight. Darryl my house is always open. Please let me know when the gloves arrive. They were just posted so I would hope that they arrive no later than the end of next week. cheers, Ryan

Ryan,

If you or anyone else is in contact with Derek, tell him all I need is the working email address he wants inserted in his profile.

Darryl,

Thanks for picking up the ball on this one and helping me carry it. This is starting to formulate nicely. I did miss you on the phone my friend, but to see you in person would be even better!
Ryan, that's great about your domestic setting. Alot more comfortable and relaxed in a friendly enviroment.Im up for that bigtime, and thanks.
My scheduale is good starting Tuesday the 18th (evening) up to the 23rd. Also this Saturday I am free as well all day. I will try and be as flexible as possible to make this happen. I have no problem taking a day off work as well ( I have alot of "time" in my lieu bank ).
Thanks for all the feedback guys, one way or another this will come together. Will check in here tommorrow evening.

Cheers
Dale

Hi Folks,

I think this is a great idea and I would definitely be up for joining you in this gathering, just unfortunately I have some family visiting from out of town for a few days and the 27th may not work out for me. I'll try and make it next round Wink

Wouldn't we also want to extend this invite to our fellow GTA'ers who may also collect Heer, luft, police, KM, etc? We are a small family after all. Wink

Cheers,

Asper

A gathering which would coincide with the Toronto Show would also be a good idea. I live in the Ottawa region and me and some friends intend to make the trip this Spring.

Well see how this one goes. Your input is recognized and needed, and if this one goes well...that would be great to expand it to accomodate your suggestions.
RYAN! I can allready taste your nachos! I am a nacho fanatic....I'm talking ...watch your fingers near the bowl! I hope this comes together. I'll drop you a line tommorrow.

Thanks
Dale!

Ryan,

As mentioned accurately by Derek, kudos on hosting and providing for the group your home and refreshments. Possibly the best Canadian WW2 home display I have ever seen as well.... and you hit the bullseye on showcasing our night....THANKS Ryan, to you and your patient family.
It was a pleasure meeting Earl,Frank,Mark,Derek and Ryan for the first time, and seeing Darryl again. It was a great exchange of artifacts and knowledge, and were already planning additional meetings like this.
Mark showed us a stunning SS M-42 helm,Derek had a stupendous Allgemeine SS Officer visor, Darryl dropped us pre-war vintage SS helms...wow, plus Canadianna Air force items from Earl and gorgeous helmets from Frank. Beauty of a nite. I am so happy it all came together. Thanks guys.

The best to you in '07,
Smile Dale

I certainly echo the comments made by Derek and Dale. It was a wonderful night of story telling and viewing of artifacts from the period. Ryan was the consummate host and his home made chili was outstanding, as were the nachos and other "treats" (liquid and otherwise Wink) that were made available to us. To top it all off, the venue was tremendous with a marvellous collection of his own on display.

Thanks Ryan. You have set a very high standard which will be extremely difficult to equal, and definitely impossible to improve upon.

Happy New Year!

Cheers,
Darryl

PS - I believe Mark will be posting some pics a little later on.

Hi guys the hospitality was a very small price to pay for the quality of artifacts/treasures that came through my door if only for a moment.Though I had met and knew most of you prior there were some people that I had never before had the pleasure of meeting. It only strengthened my belief that many on GDC are excellent and stalwart chaps. Hopefully the pictures of the treasures are posted soon for all to enjoy as a post Xmas present. Derek please feel free to leave that wonderful Waffen SS General's visor behind if you should visit again. It was a special treat to actually hold one that was unquestionably authentic in all aspects. The Allgemeine officer's visor was a treat. The mint SS M-42, snow camo and multitude of early SS Allgemeine helmets was astounding.Daryl it was amazing to see a totally original SS helmet cover that was still on the original helmet. There was also a beautiful Reichsfuhrer Waffen SS tunic, and a near mint chained SS and early Boker for you dagger chaps. cheers to all! cheers and thanks, Ryan S
