Hey gang! ....I need some help here. I have a buckle that I can't Identify. If anyone has any info on this piece....it would be great if you could share with me! The construction appears pre ww2 and the prongs appear to have the classic OLC cut. Other than that - I have no clue who would have used this type of buckle.
Any info would be great appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help!
Cheers!
Rob

Here's a closeup of the roundel. Latin stands for something like "He sleeps because we defend"...or something to that effect.
Does this ring a bell with anyone? Thanks again for any info you can post! Cheers! Rob

My guess is justice or Police, The book, Latin, sword all point to law enforcement. Jerry Burney

Thanks guys...Joe: True - there is a little ressemblance (star cluster and sword). Jerry: I've had others comment on it also being justice related. Just not getting any kind of concrete proof. I also thought perhaps police...but just not sure yet!
I do appreciate you guys taking the time to voice your opinions! Thanks very much!
Cheers!

Rob, The eight point star is standard Police, the laurel leaves and all the rest could make it nothing else. I think what you have to narrow the search to is , City, State and era. Is there a buckle book available that covers Police or perhaps post war buckles? I have many buckle books but not any that cover State or Police post war...Jerry Burney

Hey Jerry...Sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I also have many buckle references but these don't go into police buckles in detail. I'll just keep digging and see if I can find anything. I appreciate the help very much. I'll keep truckin' and see what I can come up with! Thansk again! Cheers! Rob

Rob, I have a small collection..I have tried to focus on rarities..Nothing very exotic so far but some that interest me. I just got a very nice Nazi Water Police with leather tab. Have a beautifull original Imperial Navy/Colonial buckle. Kinda hard to come by. Not much written on post war Police that I am aware of..I mostly collect German Lugers, the long barrels, Imperial Navy, Artillery and Carbine pistols as well as the leather holsters, stocks and accoutrements that accompany them. Belt buckles are a natural addition to this! Jerry Burney

Hey Jerry! It's a good thing I live in Canada (where it's damn near impossible to get handguns) 'cause I'd also be into collecting those types of weapons! Way cool! As for the buckles....I'd love to see pics (ever posted them on the forum here?). I also have a waterpolice (no tab though)....what I don't have is that Imperial Navy/Colonial buckle - sounds "delicious"!!!!
Thanks again for the help....I'm getting a lot of fellow collectors pointing me towards a police issued buckle...now I just need to find which district!
Cheers buddy!

Hallo Rob , I can definitely narrow it down for you . It's a (my) country = the Netherlands .
Post WW2 Dutch Gemeente ( city ) Politie . Notice that on the cloth sleevebadge the wording " Vigilat ut quiescant " has been left out . " Guards so they ( may ) sleep " . Buckle itself however is totally unknown to me - possibly for early parade uniform or an assembled piece ..? Stars this size were worn on the shoulderstraps indicating officers ( Inspectors ) rank . This emblem was introduced only after WW2 , that I know for sure . Hope this helps .

Hey Winkelman - looks like we have a winner! That certainly looks like the same "star"! Thanks for the info buddy - any chance though that it could have been used pre-ww2. I ask because the type of construction seems somewhat "crude". Thanks again for the info! No wonder we were having a hard time - we were looking in the wrong country! hahahaha! Cheers! Rob

Rob, You learn something every day if your not carefull! Looks like that cinches it...I live in Yuma Arizona..About half the Winter visitors here are Canadian. I am always trying to buy guns and Militaria from them but they say it's in Canada! The Kolonial/Navy buckles are rare for sure. I looked on eBay for two years before one popped up. I have seen several since at fairly reasonable prices. Watch for fakes...I have seen several of those too. Jerry Burney

Hallo Rob , sorry - no chance for prewar .. Before WW2 each city would use its own coat of arms for police insignia ; unity of insignia was only achieved during WW2 German occupation (!) , but alas not with THIS . Picture added of such a rank-star - 1 inch high , has 2 prongs . It was only DESIGNED after WW2 , as far as I can tell 1957 .. I've sent the pics to the Dutch Police Museum in Zaandam > a buckle like this was never worn , not even after the war . Which does leave us with a cleverly assembled piece , with artificial aging . P.S. Still not as bad as the Wiking Banner a friend of mine found this week in a suitcase that had not been opened for 40 years . Showing him the 1960's U.S.advertisements for these at $14.50 & the Nylon used for his item - now THAT hurt ! Best regards , Winkelman1940 .
