The FJ Helmets are obviously different from any other German helmets.

Is there a documented reason for this ?

Documented...not sure, but a guess.
Because of air flow into the FJ helmet is less than that of a standard type.
The FJ fitted closer to your head, less stress on your neck?

I had heard that the flange of an M35 would cause your neck to break if you landed wrong. The german FJs used a very different style of landing that the US paratroopers did. I'll see if I can find some documention on this.

In spite of this, the M35 was used during the invasion of Norway 1945. There is at least 1 photo showing a FJ just after he landed at Dombaas wearing his M35 and with the chute harness still on.

I think the main reason is that the rear flange will interfere if the soldier will need to look up at his chute. Say there is a tanglement. The M35 will then push the helmet down in his face. Also it does not give the same unobstructed view.

I doubt that the helmet could break a soldiers neck. Regardless of landing teqnique.

wearing an m40 helmet while skydiving would not be a good idea.i have been skydiving for 10 years and from experience the helmet would not only snag as the chute deployed but if the parachute did deploy then the lines would not have room to sit straight from the bag up to the chute. plus the helmet would not be secured to the head enough to prevent it from falling off when they jumped onto the jetstream.
