Thanks for the heads up on this guys.
I love the dagger and would only sell it if the price is right.
I saw one advertised sometime ago that was very much like mine but someone has heavily polished the blade - losing the burnish in the inscriptions and signatures, repaired and repainted the broken handle and I believe the scabbard was repainted as well. They were asking $19K !!!
I am happy leaving mine untouched. I figure most people will be able to see it is an original. I wish the grip was intact - but, it is what it is.

Thanks Again,

Mike

They can ask whatever they want. It is much harder to get it. To sell the dagger for this amount it would have to be in prestine condition. IMO
Mike, if you really want to sell the dagger, try to restore it first and then sell it. If it is not possible to restore the dagger, ask major dealers for how much they can buy the dagger. IMO it would be very difficult to get a decent amount considering the condition of the dagger. This dagger is only for a serious collector and a serious collector will buy only a top conditioned example. Hope it helps. Good luck selling it.

Thanks for the info. I pulled the listing and will keep it.

I think it is a good decision. But again try major dealers. You can find their ads on this website.Ask them what it would take to restore the dagger if possible. It would not hurt to find out your options.

This brings up a great issue for discussion.
The dagger I have is bare bones untouched.
I have often thought of having a pro restore it but am reluctant as sometimes antiques are much preferred in their original (but in this case damaged) state.
I am very green in this area as you all know but from what I read, this hobby is becomming as expensive as classic and antique cars. My bet is it goes up from here. Untouched originals - even damaged are highly sought after in antiques.
But I open the discussion to all of you members who are much more knowledgeable than I about this. And Thanks,

Mike

That sounds like a great idea.
What does an authentic Ground Rohm with a good grip usually cost?

can cost you from 3 to 4 thousand USD depending on the condition. But it will not be easy to just change the grips. Those grips were hand made back then and an experienced collector would see that the grip is not original to the blade and crossguards. So technically it would become a parts dagger. You can have someone custom fit the grip for you but it will be an additional expense.
What happened to the people who offered you twelve thousand USD? I think you mentioned it in one of your past postings. This is a very reasonable price for this dagger, I would sell it. Just my opinion.

Mike,

I believe that if your intention is to sell the dagger that you should leave it as is and let any potential buyer decide to swap grips or repair the existing one. As Oleg said, swapping grips would make it a parts dagger, would cost money and the fit would be tough to get right. Many collectors would like it as it is now. It may not be perfect but it's got a lot of appeal all the same.

On another note, I got an email from Eban that the auction was pulled. This was after I noticed you had pulled it yourself. Must be the "vast left wing conspiracy" at work again. Good luck with it though, a beautiful piece with history.

Funny thing - a few hours after I pulled the listing, ebay sent me a notice that they pulled it due to "Hateful & Discriminating - blah, blah, blah". But they are refunding my money for the ad!
So, I have no idea what it would have gone up to.
I recall reading all grips were hand cut to fit each blade / crossguard set so swapping it for another might not be the best choice. On the other hand a repair is easily determined as well I would think.
I am leaning toward leaving it the way it is.

Thanks Gentlemen - I appreciate your opinions,

Mike

i have just swopped 2 grips from ground rohm eickhorns on to my full rohm eickhorn and the fit is very acceptable. you can still get scruffy 33`s ,in the uk at least, for around $1000-1200
i offered you a dagger with a nice grip a few months back for under $2000

I thought it was $2K just for the grip - I misunderstood.

IMHO its far better to do a repair via Whittman than to do a change0exchange . Which would make it a parts dagger. Take a breath Michael time is on your side.
