AH HA! Thanks for posting this Ron. I am the guy with the first "oversized" Krebs which was posted here on GDC. Looks JUST like mine! All parts are slightly larger including the grip, slightly lighter blue leather, hanger ring and even the leather hanger is longer. Large dome screws, unique pommel, and the very rare "BOLD" swaz. NICE!!! Can you show any close-ups of the crossguard? Is it "K" stamped? Does it have a significantly wider blade than "standard"? THANKS! PS, if you (or anyone buying this) needs a krebs control tag for the piece, I still have 2 left... Johnny Johnny

Hello Johnny! In the above pic can you please identify the makers? I assume Helbigs are the standard size and Krebs are the largest. What is the "intermediate" size maker? Thanks, Leipzig

All of the "common" makers appear to have used (for the most part) the same fittings and blades. Thus most ofthe common makers like Eick., Helbig (early silver not later aluminum), Heller, etc. are essencially the same size. They do however have their own unique aspects (Heller's fittings are unique to other makers, Helbigs blades are unique to their company as well, etc.) The daggers pictured above are a Heller (standard size at bottom) a n aluminum Helbig (larger than standard at top) and a very rare Puma (middle) which is actually even larger than the Krebs (not pictured). I will try to find a picture of all 4 together for better comparison.

OK, here we go... All daggers are aligned with their pommels against a stright edge. Although it is not clear from the angle of the pic. the largest dagger is the one on the far right. From left to right; Gebr. Heller (standard) Aluminum Helbig Krebs Puma

Johnny, Excellent! Thank-You, Sir! I thought there was the "standard" size and the larger Krebs size. Did'nt know there are 4 sizes, nor did I know that the aluminum Helbig was larger! Silly me! Good to know, beautiful knives, Leipzig

If you have Whitty's Luft reference it talks about the larger aluminum Helbigs. It seems that some of the very small producers of these knives (such as Puma, Krebs, E. Pack, etc.) made their own fittings and blades (perhaps in house) and thus are different from the more common makers (my opinion anyway).

The Krebs Tom and I will offer is a presentation piece with a dedication on the top scabbard fitting with unit marking and name. The crossguard does not have the K and the hanger is also a little larger. Other manufacturers that are the standard size include SMF, Gerb. Heller, oval Eickhorn and M35-41 Eickhorn. Ron Weinand

Very interesting. I've really starting liking these daggers, after buying a SMF and now looking at other makers. Is that a gold tint in the background of the swaz. on the Krebs or just light reflecting?

OKC Mike, If you were referring to the pic. of my dagger, yes, it is the light hitting the original patina. I got lucky and this is a nice uncleaned piece. To be honest, I never liked these knives until I owned one, they really grow on you and once you realize that they are not all the same you really start appreciating the nuances in their construction... like anything else. I believe we can all relate to the way that people have begun paying attention to Heer or SA dagger construction.

Tom, I am a little confused by your post. Firstly let me assure you that if you have DLV/NSFK by different makers they ALL differ (even the common makers) in some way. I have been collecting information on the specific construction of these knives from kind fellow forum members and have info. on about 100 of these knives. I can say that no two makers are exactly the same. All appear to have used at least some differing parts of construction (this is logical as we see the same thing in SS, Heer, naval, Luft, and every other dagger type). If you are referring to Craig Gottlieb I find that very odd because my oversized Pums DLV passed through Craig's hands (I have his COA) and although he admits selling the dagger never noticing that it is about 1 inch longer than "standard", when I showed it to him at his own party at the 2007 MAX he agreed that the piece was 100% period and obviously larger than a "standard" example that I brought allong. There are forum members who were at the party who can confirm this. Furthermore, I think you were looking at the wrong post wehen you called Ron a "tag whore". The DLV pictured above with the control tag is mine, not Ron's. Thus, I suppose I am the "tag whore"... Oh well, if the shoe fits... Good hunting, Johnny

Being 100% sarcastic here....Maybe its an inside joke with no one but myself but a few years back I had a MINT helbig Aluminum that I sold to craig...he wanted to return it because he said the blade was shortened and in his words "quite a bit and a terrible job"..Now the Dagger was proven to be later helbig sloppy work and the blank for the blade was a bit thinker than normal giving a thick edge at the tip but 100% original. As for the Tag whore thing Sorry bout that,I saw Ron had posted the WKC RLB with the Zinc rot for sale on the For sale Forum and Jumped the gun...No Offense : )

Hate to be the bearer of bad news on this old thread but that Krebbs looks awfully questionable to me. That crossguard detail is terrible and so is the lower scabbard fitting. It might look pretty but it sure wouldnt sell me. If you look at the earlier thread on the fakes out there , this fits the bill..sorry. Tiep
