After a while not really collecting I have been offered this and I like the look of it, just thought I woulod get opinions on it to save getting ripped off again. Looks ok to me but can I have your opinins on it before I shell out $6,000 on it, I know there is a bit of pitting on the blade.

I dont want to make a "final" judgment based on just these pictures.
Is that a double-strike of the "kulturzeichen" on the chain-link?
The Wotans-knot seems to have some strange wear, or very uneven finishing.
Maybe this is normal, or could be a replacement as these nickel-silver chains are weak.

Looks promising though based on these pics alone.

Cheers,

That one is 100% correct IMO. The photos of the blade don't show enough condition-wise. I don't see the pitting that you are describing, but if it's not too bad $6k is a bargain.

I agree on authenticity. It appears to be a desirable nickel-silver fitted model with few serious problems. I don't think the price is at all unreasonable, based upon the photos.

Everything seems fine but no real bargain considering the condition.
You can buy a much better conditioned M36 for about a $ 1000 more.
Go for the best and you will never have any regrets, just my opinion. Wink

From what I have seen the best conditioned examples start at $8k and go up from there.

I just like it as an un touched looking piece, always wanted a real honest one as most of these 36s have been cleaned to within an inch of their lives. If its genuine I will be happy paying $6,000 for it.

The piece looks great for 6 grand! I'll agree with Skyline on this. I know where there are a couple now about the grade of this piece and they are over 8 grand!

Red Face
Alright then, let's say $ 2000 more. Big Grin
Haven't shopped around for quite a while and didn't know that an average M36 was now selling for $ 8000 USD. Eek

I would be afraid to know what would an early nickel silver Chained M36 be worth nowadays ?

Agree with you Pat. Wink

the best investment is to spend the "greens" on near minted daggers.

There's a few early nickel around at dealers for 7,5k-9k, from exc to exc++ condition, maybe similar to this or somewhat better.
I really cannot tell what the blade is like on this dagger shown here.

It look like the blade has oil on it, which could be the reason for the strange colors, smears, etc. Unless the blade is a disaster or has been ground to clean it up, I still think it's a nice dagger for the money. The blade should "tell the tale" here and I would want to see better photos of it with the oil removed and then a "hands on" look over.

Looks like an early, nickel silver one to me and at that price, its a buy.
Always with oil on the blade, you have to be careful as light sharpening doesn't show up with grease or oil on the blade in photos.
But, if no sharpening, its a real buy.

Minty early M36 are more than 8k! Looks like a nice dagger, I love the unmessed with salty look. I got one just like yours from a vets son 5 years ago. Looks like a keeper!

I'd be proud to have a uncleaned dagger like that and would actually prefer it to a mint and shinny example. That dagger shows some honest use, character, and history to it and I think that it's priced very resonable.

Turns out it comes with all the history, seems that the owner is still alive. He moved from germany to the USA in the 60s!. I bought it from his son in law on his behalf, I already have his name and the son is getting all the details to send me in the next few weeks.

He also has a mint and untouched Heer dagger that is completely black as well (im not interested). I will get a few more pictures of it and maybe post it in the for sale forum rather than see it end up on ebay or something!. Told him to expect $4-500 for it, again will come with the history so will also proove to be a nice piece for someone on here.

It was delivered today to the office, I am really really pleased with it. Im glad the seller turned out to be so genuine as its always worrying sending $thousands over seas to someone you dont know. It is better than in the pictures a real nice sleeper of a dagger, lovely patina and original burnishing great original crazed paint on the scabbard. The blade has a lovely cross grain and has not been sharpened just shows signs of runner marks so overall it is better than I expected. I will take a few photos when i get home and post them on the forum.

Nice early nickel chained SS Mongo. I like it. Smile

That "untouched" look is great.
Most chained SS have been "molested" over the years (Cleaned up to bring higher value). Not to mention other "improvements".

That early SS chained dagger is a "buy" for 6K.
We all saw a worse conditioned "plated" version sell here for around 8K recently.
