hello all. i`ve just got back from the veiwing day at an auction house, where to my surprise they had a 2nd pattern luft `gustav spitzer`, white grip with wire, very good blade complete with hangers. the auction house a small local co. say that this maker mark is rare. now i know little about luft daggers, my field being sa`s, is this true are they a rarity?, and if so this must make them more valuable desirable, i`ve got till am tomorrow to decide wether to go along and put in a bid, so any advice would be great. sorry for the lack of pics but i wasn`t expecting to see it there, i didn`t have a camera, and i don`t think photo`s are allowed inside the auction premises anyway.they value it at around 200, (325 dollars or thereabouts). help!!.many thanks in anticipation. steve.

I'd say more uncommon than rare. But for that price, it's probably a good deal. Make sure the fittings are aluminum and give it the "Hang" test. This is where you hold the dagger by its hanger and see if it hangs with the tip of the scabbard low. Some reproductions use heavier fittings and, as a result, hang almost horizontally. Make sure the blade has the cross-graining if it isn't the plated variety. Also, there is a thread here on Spitzer Armies showing the makers mark. You can use these to compare.
I hope this helps. Good luck!
Bill

willy, many thanks for the tips, i planned on taking a magnet to check whether another item i was originally there to view was steel, so now i`ll run it over the fittings on the dagger.much appreciated, steve.
