Dave,
I think RMS is right asomething to do with music, I'm thinking it's a members pin. Nice looking one and I think it's an imperial piece.

The abbreviation "Lothring." stands for "Lothringen", which in French is "Lorraine". Elsass is the German way of saying "Alsace". So the badge is from the area between France & Germany called "Alsace-Lorraine". This region in n/w France, consisting of the former provinces of Alsace & Lorraine, was adopted by Germany in 1871 but given back to France by the wonderful Versailles Treaty. Germany retook it in 1940; it went back to France in 1944. Yes, it's a badge of the Deutscher Sangerbund (German Singer's League), made up of operetta vocalists & other professional singer-entertainers. Many US cities used to have German "Sangerbunds"; there used to be one in Erie PA which later became a wild all-nite private-club dance spot but still retained the name "The Sangerbund".
