Hi to All, I got this knife some time ago and can't find any info from my books, it has a metal scabbard with a nice lever type catch, it has some decoration type stampings on both sides, hard to see in pics, the metal catch is marked DRGM on the top( hard to see in pic) and numbers 633 823 on the bottom, the 4 1/2 inch blade is marked GARANITE FEIN STAHL, I'm not sure of the grip material but it has 2 rivets applied. I'm hoping someone can help me get a maker or some type of info, I can send full res pics if needed. Thanks in advance, Eric

E.,
The DRGM mark is because it has a unique catch system on it.. That is a bone handle,, a 'fine steel' blade.
Not sure of date,,probably WW1 sometimes around there..
Nice piece for sure!

No idea.. Good thought about the trace from the DRGM number [if that's what they are!], but you'd need to have those records somewhere ,who even knows if they survived the war.
anyway,,
,,This pattern is commonly referred to as the 'Hunting style' by some. Maybe try our site here but over at the Houston Coats forum,,maybe someone will know or have access to an old catalog.. Good luck, please post if you find anything out about it..

This type of knife with this type of blade is what we refer to as a skinning knife used by German hunters. Used not only for skinning, but also to kill a wounded animal swiftly. In German it's called a "nicker" or genickfnger. These types of knifes were carried by German soldiers in WWl along with other types of scabbards and blades of this nature, as well as the one you show with the swivel bolt catch. The nicker you show certainly looks exactly like the ones carried in this type of scabbard during the period, and looks like a period piece to me, but Houston might know with certainty. Does it have a cardboard sleeve inside the scabbard and what are the initials on the pummel? Hope this helps a little and thanks for showing it. Regards.

Hi, Eric !

As I wrote in the WAF:

Congrats bud, a very fine knife !

This is a, so called, "Nicker", private purchased in WWI.

DRGM means "Deutsches Reichs-Gebrauchsmuster" and 633 823 is the number of the patent for the safety, to hold the knife in the scabbard.

The grip-material supposted to be spruce, imitating staghorn.

Thx. for showing !

Cheers,

R.
