Great site!
After looking at the other forums I surmise it is a nice post war piece. I paid $300, how bad am I buried? I see these selling on eBay to the folks who have no inclination toward education for $600.

Ed, welcome to the forum.
Yes, I believe you are correct in that your dagger is a post war copy. Etched Eick. mottos on this type are not considered to be "good" from what I understand.
How badly did you get "burned", well, that is a tough question. If you WANTED an original piece then you got burned. Frown If you want a great looking piece (that only you and a few seroius collectors would be able to tell is post-war) and you would rather pay $300 than $1500, then maybe you got a deal! It is all in how you look at it. Wink
I think you will find that most collectors on this site hold little appreciation for the post-war pieces, but if you are on a budget and want somthing that looks cool and costs a LOT less, then this may be just the thing for you...
It is one of those "eye of the beholder" things.

As an example, I collect only original 3rd reich pieces and must pay a LOT to get them. My brother however likes the look of the daggers but would NEVER buy an original, he is actually interested in buying repro's.

My point: I buy for the HISTORY and only originals have HISTORY.

His point: He wants a dagger that looks cool and if no one (of his friends) can tell the difference, why pay more???

I love my brother, but we will NEVER see eye-to-eye on this issue!!! Big Grin

Whether or not you got burned depends on what YOU wanted.
Just my 2 cents.
Welcome, and good hunting,
Johnny

I must agree with Johny V's brother. Why pay $$$$$'s for something that 99.9% of the general public and your friends couldn't tell from a copy? I find it weird that some chaps just collect dozens of SA daggers. What's wrong with a generic example of ALL of the TR daggers in replica rather than one or two REALLY expensive originals. It would be different if you were using the daggers every day, but they are stuck on the wall or in a case 360 days of the year, only being taken down to be wiped and cleaned. Maybe I secretly wish that I could afford big bucks for the originals but as it goes I'm quite happy with my repros and one or two originals.

Thanks for the great info! I did hope it was original but knew in my gut it was too good to be true. I have a couple others that I will post on the Army/ Luftwaffe forum pages. The army looks to have the original cross grain as described on this site. I want to keep pieces with history, which is the point of collecting an edged historical artifact for me.
Thanks, Ed

Terry, I think you have missed the point entirely. If collecting historical artifacts that have an intrinic value is "weird" to you; then paying good al-be-it little money for some junk knocked up in eastern europe or asia is certainly quite unfathomable to me. Confused

I take your point Vaughan but 'each to his own'!
Surely a VISUAL reminder of these horrifying years (in the form of TR items, daggers et al)is enough be they real or genuine? (Vain attempt to weasel out of previous pontifications!!) Roll Eyes
