I was able to buy this p38 hardshell holster&spare mag without the pistol, they were asking too much for the pistol so it is being sold separatly. The eagle was probably attached by the vet,I dont think the ss guy would do it. Anyway vet bringback, prongs intact, dont know wether to try carefully removing the eagle or leave it alone, what would you guys do.Holster is in super shape but will have a couple small pin holes.I figured I couldnt get hurt for 300.00,spare mag and holster is worth about that, eagle is about free.

This was actually a fairly common practice. I have seen several vet bring-back holsters decorated with various metal insignia. Skulls (both SS and panzer) were favorites for adorning souvenir holsters.
Many will argue that it should be left alone as the piece of history it is. It certainly tells its own story about pots-war occupation GIs. Personally, however, I see no problem with removing the eagle. That is what I would do...CAREFULLY!

I would leave it.Those prongs are 60 years brittle. Unless you want to savege the holster for the sake of the eagle. It looks like a nice display as it is.Short of having a heavily stamped p-38 in it.

Thanks guys,I already have a byf44 p38 to go with the holster&extra mag, will have to check it out when it comes and decide.Sure would like to put the eagle in my display case with the rest of my ss insignia but I dont want to break off the prongs either,I bet I can carefully remove it undamaged.Anyway I would like to see what maker, might be a rare one.I have seen these metal cap eagles on dealer sites go for 300.00-400.00 bucks if you can find one.

I would just leave it alone. Reason if it has been there since day one . It would leave a shadow where it once was. The you would be explaining to everyone why the holes there and the shadow marks. It will sell very well as is. That is a collector point of view.
Thanks Joe Semen

Shame to break the holster away from the pistol after 60+ years. I don't blame you if they are asking a rediculous price for the P.38, I blame them. To some, $ will always win.
WANTED TO REPURCHASE!! Walther pistol Model PP - ac code - Ser. No. 382000P - REWARD FOR INFO ABOUT THIS PISTOL!!

I dont know, what about replacing it with a army or luft eagle?Anyway the pistol was priced at 1500.00 for a 85-90% common byf44 in the "a" block, thats more than double what its worth.I see now the price has been dropped to 1200.00,I may make an offer and get the pistol too but he will have to come way down or I wont buy it.

Just stuff yours in there and forget about it. You can still get an eagle for your display for a couple hundred it's the skulls that are hard. But I wouldn't mess. I know the pain of breaking a prong and I was like Ben Casey . Also you would be altering an artifact. Sorry to reply twice.

I have a P38 holster with a Political Eagle attached to the flap. Took it off to discover the leather was very discolored. And you could see a perfect outline of the eagle. Must have been on there for a long time. Probadly the Vet who brought it back. Anyway I put it back on for good.

Brad,I know what you mean,200.00 is cheap for an original eagle, there are tons of fakes out there .I think a nice one all intact would sell for 300.00 or more in a heartbeat.
