Gents,
Just about to acquire a helemt that has some inner rust (the picture makes the rust appear worse that it is in reality). May I ask your advice? Would you attempt to remove the rust? If so what technique/cleaners would you recommend?
Thanks much,
Mike

Mike,
Welcome to the forum. I think you will find most guys will tell you to leave the rust alone. Just keep it in a controlled enviroment where it will not get worse.

Hi Mike,
Unless this is a "special" helmet, why not hold out and get one without the rust? If it is indeed special to you then I would simply use a soft dry bristle brush and gently brush inside to get all the loose rust and particles out and then do as Bernie suggested...leave it alone.
Cheers,
Darryl

Hello Mike,
Knowing that you are an SS cloth collector then this must be an SS helmet. Any further pics of it??

Hi Glenn,
Darryl actually gave me the exact description of the decal/helmet - and he cast his eye over it before I committed. It is however coming from elsewhere Cheers,

Hey Darryl. I agree with the "special" helmet concept. It's an SS. Special in my book. The brush is a good idea. After that, if it were me, I would Claybar the area that you just brushed down and get it down to the paint. I did a thread on Claybar here before. Some people loved it, some people didn't want it coming near their lids. Mainly it's used to polish cars with clear coats. Makes a clear coated car look like it just roled off the line. You can find it on http://www.griotsgarage.com "Paint Cleaning Clay". Nice helmet! quote: Originally posted by darryl: Hi Mike,
