Hi:
I'm new to this. I'm wondering if I could get some opinions on what the best books are for giving someone information on German bayonets and the markings that identify their makers, etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Great books on bayonets are: The Sword and Knife Makers of Germany, 1850-2000, by Anthony Carter Bayonets of the World, by Paul Kiesling. The Kiesling book does not identify the makers, but is a great reference book for any bayo collector. A great set of books identifying the various makers and maker marks used by German manufacturers are volumes 3 & 4 of Fisher's NS Dagger Maker Trademarks. You can buy the Fisher books at lakesidetrader.com and the others come up occasionally on e-ban. A good place to look on the world wide web is: http://wikingsbajonetcollection.ooz.dk/John
Always looking for Eickhorns and etched bayonets.

Thank you for the advice. I've added bookmarks to my folder thanks to both of you.
Keep those suggestions coming.
I'm excited and waiting for my first bayonet, scabbard and frog to arrive in the mail any day now...

Good books on German bayonets:-
The German S84/98 Bayonet Vol 1 1908-1933 - Bruce Karem.
The Collectors Book of German Bayonets 1680-1945 - Roy Williams.
Seitengewehr - George Wheeler.
German Sidearms and Bayonets : 1740-1945 - Klaus Lubbe.
Various books by Anthony Carter.
IMO - all useful references.
Regards
Richie

Keep in mind the Lubbe book has several fakes in the KS98 section.

I've read a lot about etched blades lately and my goal is to avoid them like the plague until I know much more and understand the marks and numbering system better. I have my eyes on a book and a bayonet or two. I think I need three before I have a "collection" I'm happy with my first purchase, however. Thanks for the info!

How good is this book, honestly... For some reason I really want it. Any opinions?

Here is a small book I put together for beginners. It covers the different TR dress bayonets you will find, and how they are put together. I have a section on Trade Marks that I have observed in the 20 years of collecting, and a section on scabbards. Nothing like Georges book but great for the beginner.

I agree, mine's sitting on the desk next to the computer now! It rarely stays on the shelf very long. Lance

Thanks for the great advice. I'm doing a library search for Wheeler's book. I hope I can find it and borrow it first before buying it. I doubt, however, that any library in my area would have it, but we'll see...

mpj_46,
I don't think there is any ONE book that fully covers the subject of German bayonets. Depending on which era or model you collect, you may need several. For example, Bruce Karem's book deals only with S84/98 prior to 1933. While Wheeler's book covers German bayonets from 1919-1945.
Happy collecting,
Keith
