Hi,

I have this 1916 sawback Stahlblume bayonet and was curious about a mark on it. On the crossguard on the grip side there's a star mark. Anybody know what it is?

Here's the star mark I'm wondering about.

While I'm at it...does anyone know any info about the frog? It has some numbers stamped on it very faintly, below the center line of stitching. It looks like maybe three numbers, maybe 133? There's also the Roman numeral "VII".

Thanks - Tim

Hello Tim.

All manner of strange markings have been found on a number of places on the S98/05 series, and no one knows what they denote as of yet. Stahlblume bayos (of which there are several different marking styles) are often found with these strange markings.

Regarding the frog, it is difficult to tell what such markings might denote as there needs to be more information. Many frogs are marked with Bekliedungsamt markings on an Army Corps level. If that were the case, then the marking could denote the Bekliedungsamt of the 7th (Westphalian) Armee Korps, in which case the Prussian NCO troddeln you have would be correct.

Out of curiosity, any regimentally marked Imperial kS98 sawback bayonets in your collection?

Somewhere along the line, I heard that the six pointed star was utilized as a universal quality control mark, used mainly on swords.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies.

I wasn't sure if the marks on the frog were unit marks, or maker marks. Is it more likely to be one or other?

Nathaniel, I wish I had a Ks98 sawback to show, but I don't.

I also have a star like the one posted on a 1917 unit marked REMSCHELD S9805 but the mark is on the blade spine.
