Hello,

I purchased this pennant a few months back.
Since then, I have looked, in vain, for another leather example. Has anyone else seen these leather pennants before? Any idea which branch... SA, NSDAP or other? It must be fairly early, as there is no RZM, DRGM, or any other stamps.

Thanks,

Marcus

Robert,

I am glad that you like the piece.
Yes, the entire pennant is made of leather, the swastika is cut into one single piece. One side is very smooth, and the other side is quite wrinkled (I believe this is the inner side, swinging into the hood and causing the wrinkles)

The red leather is quite thick and holds it's shape very well. There is no wire stiffener.
The leather pennant has a rather sinister look to it and I would very much like to know who's auto it had flown upon.

Based on the condition of the staff, it looks to have been used for years. Another collector told me he had seen all leather pennants before, but he owned none and I've yet to find another like it. If I had to make a wild guess, I would think it to be SA, circa 1934, but who knows?

Regards

I really like it's been there appearance and deep coloring.
Is there any way you could show the other side of the pennant?
Hope you can get more answers to this interesting peice.

Thank you Dean.

The first two fotos in the thread are of the wrinkled side, the last two fotos show the smooth side.

Well, as an emblem of the NSDAP, the pennant could have been used by a variety of orgs.within the Third Reich.Possibly only the original users or the liberating soldier could tell you..

Sometimes being made of leather does not indicate an earlier piece, as i have a political leaders car pennant circa 1936 that is printed. That being said, leather was in short supply later in the war..

As a thought, perhaps the side facing the hotter side of the hood takes more punishment than the other..

Doug,
You are correct in stating that this pennant could have belonged to a multitude of NS organs.

Your are also correct that leather was in short supply during the war. Most NSDAP items were RMZ marked from 1934 onward, and perhaps this was made in the later 1930s and the RZM label was lost with years of usage.

Never considered the "heat" from the engine causing the wrinkles. Good thinking.

Thank you all for the comments!

Doug, can you show a foto of your printed PL pennant? Would love to see it.
Thanks.
