This has been 4 sale for a few years now by the same seller. If it were real it would have been snapped up in a second.

Thanks Loki. Could you tell me where this helmet has been previously listed and the price? What makes you think it's a fake?

Cheers

i cant make a call on it, if its fake its a good one, although two things hit me, they look to sit on top of the lid rather than blend in, and the border seems a little thick, however the rest does seem to comply dimention wise, tough one

maybe it`s caused by the `flare` of the helmet rim, but in the first picture, the point on the bottom of the runes decal looks slightly off centre to me. also agree about the border of the decal looking thinner in a couple of places. very hard to call from pics alone.

It was previously listed for sale on another forum and eBay awhile back with no buyers. That should tell you something.

Loki. Could you provide a link to one of the sales? I still want to know what's wrong with it?

Hey aren't there any closeups of the decals only??? It looks all right to me, judged by the pics providet, but can't really say anything for sure, without shots of the decals.

Why? Is something wrong with the SS rune? And, yes Kevin, it's a m40 hkp. Cheers

Not for me!!
Yes there is something wring with the runes AND the party decal.

I can recommend the book: SS-Steel by Kelly Hicks. All answers are in that book....

close ups show the runes are not sharp enough, /not defined, so now ive seen a close up im affraid i would not gamble on it and agree with foamspoon, loki and anders, .

O.K. Thanks for all of you who have provided your valuable opinions. Actually it's not the decals caught my eyes in the first place, but it's the fact that this one is a DD HKP. As far as I know, HKP succeeded SE in the late 1941 or early 42 (some source states as late as 1943) and the double decal practice were most popular during the year 1940. So it seems there at least 1 year gap between the two regulations. Can anyone explain to me if there is any possibility that you can ever find a DD helmet on late M40 model or even on a M42 helmet? Cheers.

Yes, but such helmets are VERY rare, and expensive when found. I have seen 3 M42 DD-- two being "foreign volunteers" and one a re-issue from a police helmet.

I have seen a few more M40 DD, about 1 dozen or so.. these tend to have decal issues, especially the Qs. (They chip/peel easy).

You need to be very carrful, though, if that is the type of helmet you want, as the Swastika for a M40/M42 DD would be field applied, and some fakers are quite good at reproducing the "field apply' look.

You should buy SS STeel by Hicks , and if possible post for comment before purchase.
