Private purchased police clamshell bayonet that still retains the Weimar police grip insignia. Only marking on the bayonet is the manufacturer's logo "ASC" and the two scales.

Black leather and steel unmarked scabbard.

On the reverse side of the handle there is attached a steel oval with the letter "K" apparently from the original owner. No sharpening marks or dings on the blade.

Purchased this seitengewehr from Houston at the MAX a few years ago.

I remember seeing this piece once before, it's a winner. Very nice detail in the pebbling on the reverse crossguard too, usually they're plain on these private purchase pieces.

Wonderful pommel, I forgot about that tidbit. That certainly wasn't done by hammering in a few nails I should have bought it when I had the chance. Can't believe Houston let it get away.

I have another private purchased police bayonet, also with the clamshell and the Weimar grip insignia that I was discussing with Houston, when he offered me this one.

My other one I keep at my office and it attracts a lot of attention.

I also have a government purchased police clamshell that I will post pictures of.

FYI - the other private purchased Weimar police is not personalized. Nice seitengewhr, but the owner didn't add anything to it like Mr. K (?)did with this one.

My mistake but please, show it anyway. I think we'd all love to see a nice Weimar Polizei example. Here's a private purchase Weimar clamshell. I have a fondness for maker marks, this one is reverse ricasso stamped "Fr. Muhlenfeld, Barmen". An old picture, sorry for the glare.

One thing I noticed about your personalized piece just now is what appears to be gold coloring on some of the feathers of the pommel, is there gold coloring there on both sides? I wonder if it's nicotine patination or if the pommel was originally gold washed, nice either way.

Outstanding Weimar clamshell you just posted. I find the Weimar grip emblamed police bayonets very interesting. Obiviously there are far less of them then the TR ones. Most I have seen were private purchased that the owners never changed over the grip insignia, either due to their retirement or death. These apparently were just left in a drawer in the house when the officers completed their police service.

THe "gold" color on mine appears to be from nicotine. I have not cleaned it, as residue adds "something" to the set.

I was catching up on some old notes to the GDM dated 26 January 2008 from Gercolctor reguarding a Weimar Police clamshell dress bayonet with the supposed mark "K" on the reverse side. Is there the possibility that this could be a Japanese idiogram??

The "K" along side a star * is located on the spine of the blade. During the Weimar/Nazi period the police used various letters and K was one of them. Most, if not all of this style police bayonet blades have the star * and a letter located on the spine. This mark is not Japanese.

I think Jack was referring to the brass plate affixed to the reverse grip plate. I thought that when I initially saw the piece, that the letter elements appear to have an almost oriental appearance.

Your correct, I missed his meaning.

The personalized "K" does have a somewhat of a oriental look to it. I do not know if it is Japanese.
