First the story behind this helmet ;

Found this morning at an antique market here in Amsterdam . My usual reaction is ( sorry ) to DISREGARD such a decal completely , since every second helmet offered here has one ( added yesterday , that is ! ). Decal rather glossy , and not even put on perfectly straight .

And even though the helmet itself shows moisture damage - paintblisters all over the backside - the price was fair for a usable liner .

When I took a closer look at it at home , I started to get a little nervous - this decal wasn't THAT bad at all .. Tiny veins of rust underneath , and at the small damage in corner . Not an overnight job .

Going over pics on GDC , I got more nervous - it doesn't seem to match the repro's I found so far , only one that was described as a " high end fake " . [ For this , please see the pic I added to the pinned thread " Fake Decal Archive "] So what is a high end fake doing on a helmet that I paid the liner's worth for ? Unless ... ?!

I realize all too well that this kind of thing could no longer happen in 2006 , so the forum is very welcome to put me out of my daydream !

Helmet ; M35 with M40 matt paint , green is darker than appears in pic. Notice the decal is slightly " slanted ".

Sorry for the bad news. As Bryan says above, it's a reproduction SS decal.

You would have rolled the dice on it? A little bit orf experience and research would have been better unless it was extremely cheap. Funny that you would "roll the dice" on a poor fake of an SS helmet but not on an obviously good SS dagger as posted in the forum Big Grin cheers, Ryan

not an overly bad decal, if the border had been thinner it would look more convincing.

Hey Zorro, did you miss round three Big Grin cheers, Ryan P.S. I can't sharpen my daggers as I sold them all to Tom Whittman and Tom Johnson years ago, every last one of them. Talk to some of the guys on this forum, they will tell you the quality of the items that I sell. Paul "Lakesidetrader" bought a stone cold mint chained double proofed NSKK leaders dagger from me. Just one of many. " To first learn one must accept that there are others that know more than they do" Wink

It's nice to see that the space I wasted with my no-good helmet is put to some use this way - a prize fight ..

Phil , thanks for the more useful comment !
