Been a bit quiet here so I thought I'd post a couple of Sticks.

First up a 25 year DHV (Deutscher Handlungsgehilfen-Verband).

Cheers

Here are three that I have on approval:

This is the "Ja" pin worn by supporters of the Naziz before those last election. Cheap tin hollow on the back.

This is the best one. Appears to be a miniature of a medal. Any ID or guess at value would be appreciated.

Dave,

The last one is a stickpin of the Feldehrenzeichen, the known as the Field Honour Cross. This was a post WWI award presented by the city of Hamburg to all soldiers from there that served in WWI. Quantity awarded unknown.

I can't help with a value I'm afraid as these aren't my area.

Cheers
Don

First that I've had my hands on one, although I've seen pix before.

Unfortunately, there's a little corrosion to the guilding on the front. However, it's hardly visible in hand as the badge is only about 1.5cm in height.

Cheers
Don

Thanks Don

I love the 25 year DHV pin, I have the normal DHV pin but had never seen the 25 year.

The pin with the bust of the soldier is another one that I have been looking for but they(dealers) always think there made of gold.

Nice collection and great pictures.

Very nice Jamie.

That's the problem with these things, often we don't get any idea of scale. I had toyed with the idea of getting one of those little scale things like you see 'em use on CSI & such programs to put next to items when I scan them.

Cheers
Don

What if we all settled on a scale comparison item such as a small 10mm X 10mm square of paper placed beside an object? That's just an for instance idea, but it should be something everyone could come up with.

What org. does the DHV represent. It appears to be medical related. I've got a feeling some meaning gets lost in the translation.

The DHV stands for: Deutschnationaler Handlungsgehilfen Verband (National Association of Commercial Employees),- a right-wing conservative white-collar worker's group.

Schloss 1, thanks. I was beginning to think I was rattling around in here by myself. Big Grin When typed into a translator Handlungsgehilfen comes back as Action Assistants. I wonder why the use of the caduceus? Is it still a caduceus without intwined snakes?

Hello Gents,

Thanks for the translation, I too have been racking my brains trying to figure out what Action Assistants did Confused

Joe,

Might be an idea..... (with the paper).

Cheers

Hi Don. The paper square might work or perhaps others will kick in an idea.

-------------------------------------------------

Appears from some quick limited research the winged staff is not considered an Askulap / Caduceus. Aparently there have been various representations used over the years, two snakes, single snake, and it has been confused with the staff of Aesculapius.

I have yet to run across an image or a description of the winged staff alone.

In German-English dictionaries, that symbol, is used to indicate a Commercial term (Handelswesen). I dislike using on-line translators except for one-word translations, as they are most always inadequate for longer type words, such as "Handlungsgehilfen". Other symbols used in German dictionaries are (1) crossed swords for a military term; (2) crossed hammers for a mining term; (3) a Postal Horn for a term having to do with the Postal Service; (4) an anchor for terms having to do with nautical; (5) an open book for scientific terms, etc. In the case of this badge, having on it that 'Handelswesen' commercial symbol, it narrows the translation down from many meanings of "Handlungs---" to a commercial term, & so the "Action" translation is not correct, as not pertaining to what is at hand. So a "Handlungsgehilfe" would be a salesclerk, or sales assistant in a commercial store.

Schloss 1, again thanks for the info. The emblem you mention from the dictionary, is it with or without coiled snakes?

Gaspare, thanks for posting the ring. Nice ring, thanks to the owner.

Joe, the picture of the symbol is tiny, but using a magnifying glass, yes, one can see the twisting snakes curling outwards under the wings. I don't understand why snakes are used but it must have something to do with olde German trade, industry, or scientific symbols.

The badge of derjager show....
The wings of Hermes, Classic Greek god of commerce. He had winged feet.
The Romans took over this god of trade and called him Mercury.
Mercury (Mercurius) symbol is the serpent-twined staff. On his statues you see M. with the staff in his hand and the wings on his helmet.
On Jamie's and Gaspare's picture is the winged staff.
Cheers,
Benten
