Petsamo, you have many ss caps... this one is more old ( 1960... ) I like the wool, and the insignia seems more nice... but the interior is terrible... the Waffen ss colored schirmmutze are VERY HARD TO FIND maybe 1 on 1000 is good... Sebastien.

PETSAMO- YOU NEED TO TAKE A YEAR AND STUDY ORIGINAL EXAMPLES OF THESE CAPS. THIS IS A HORRIBLE FAKE. I WAS A SERIOUS COLLECTOR OF HEADGEAR IN THE 60'S AND NEVER SAW REPRODUCTIONS LIKE THIS. I BELIEVE IT IS MORE RECENT IN AGE. THE MATERIAL ON THE HAT LOOKS BRAND NEW! STUDY ORIGINAL VISOR CAPS FROM THE PERIOD AND LEARN HOW FABRIC GAINS A "PATINA" OVER THE YEARS. BOB

Hello Sir Coleman, first, thanks for your nice registration in my forum I am Always interested for your opinion and your knowledge about the German caps. I know your old collection ( political and SS ) and I would like to post more opinion and feeling on WAF but I am not "Welcome" on this Forum... you are a experimented German collector and a " Knowledge Messenger" but I am disagree with you about the reproduction period, that wool manufacture seems more old...30 or 40...maybe more old... years for my opinion ( ... 1960-70 ) not more. after this period the fake cap was very similar in the manufacture... but, the wool is maybe "original", after the war lot of original untouched wool was RE utilised for manufactured fake German caps ( many 43 caps, Jacket...) and you can see the famous "EXTRA KLASS" maker utilised these wool manufacture in Period... Maybe that cap has been manufactured in 1960 or After... with a original wool, and with a total fake interior...it's possible... what do you think ? Sebastien.

I CAN OF COURSE ONLY SPEAK FOR THE HATS THAT WERE AVAILABLE IN THE STATES IN THE 1960'S. THE FIRST REPRODUCTION HATS I ENCOUNTERED WERE THE BEINHORN HATS, WHICH ACTUALLY DATE FROM THE LATE 50'S. THE NEXT GENERATION WERE THE SS SILVER PIPED ALTESTE HATS, IN THE 60'S. ALL OF THE FAKE HATS WERE SS. DURING THAT ERA, COLLECTORS WERE FEW AND MATERIAL WAS READILY AVAILABLE. THE FAKE SS HATS OF THE ERA WOULD NOT FOOL AN EXPERIENCED COLLECTOR OF THE TIME. I BELIEVE THEY WERE AIMED AT A MARKET OF PEOPLE WHO HAD INTEREST BUT DID NOT COLLECT ON A REGULAR BASIS. FOLLOWING THE 60'S, THE FAKES INCREASED AS DID ALSO THE INTEREST IN COLLECTING 3RD REICH MATERIAL. THE ATTEMPT AT SUPER FAKES IN THE 90'S SEEMED TO COINCIDE WITH THE GROWTH OF THE INTERNET. I DO BELIEVE THAT SOME BETTER QUALITY FAKE HATS WERE MADE IN THE 80'S, BUT IN LIMITED PRODUTION. FAERES HAVE ATTEMPTED TO MAKE THE BETTER PRODUCTS FROM ORIGINAL MATERIAL WHEN AVAILABLE. TODAY, ONE MUST KEEP UP ON THE FAKERS AND THEIR IMPROVED CRAFT. THESE FORUMS HAVE GONE A LONG WAY TO ASSIST IN THIS ENDEAVOR. UNFORTUNATELY, SOME ITEMS STILL REQUIRE A HAND EXAMINATION FOR A COMPETENT OPINION. MY THOUGHTSD, FOR WHAT THEY ARE WORTH. I CERTAINLY AM NO STRANGER TO BEING STUCK WITH FAKE ITEMS. IT GOES WITH THE FIELD IN WHICH WE COLLECT. BEST REGARDS, BOB
PS: I ENCOUNTERED A NUMBER OF HATS MADE WITH OLDER MATERIAL IN THE LATE 90'S. THEY WERE BEING DISTRIBUTED ALL OVER NORTH AMERICA BY A DEALER WHO IS KNOWN IN DEALING IN SUCH MATERIAL THROUGH DISTRIBUTORS. IT IS LIKELY THT MUCH OF THIS MATERIAL CAME FROM OLD STOCKS FOUND IN THE FORMER EAST GERMANY AND EASTERN BLOCK NATIONS.

I am on a poor screen today but that cap looks good. Look at the aging of it compared to the ss caps and overall construction. David

Dear Bob, thanks for your great answer, you are right about the first reproduction, the first "Real" repro are Alteste cap manufactured in Germany and Europa in 1955-65 for the War movie or theatral show, but I have seen a eReL cap with the first fuzy Post war eRel Logo, the first US reproduction manufactued in Hollywood in 1950 I think, very nice Fake model... yes in EAST GERMANY AND EASTERN BLOCK NATIONS the untouched wool was very important just after the War, and lot of faker manufactured these repro caps with this wool and other post war... A that "Pekuro" is EXCELLENT a good new for you ! no red flag with Sebastien.

Yeah, this one does look good from the general appearance but, did Deschler use this form of pin attachement? Please excuse my ignorance.
