I just got this great and salty looking DAF belt buckle in the mail .
It looks like it had an anodized finish at one time .

..and a close-up of the hmks.
I think the M 4/49 and the logo in the circle stand for Steinhaus & Luck , Luedenscheid .

You are correct about the maker mark.
Does your buckle appear to have old varnish remaining or is it a gilt version?

It is not gilt --so must be the remains of old varnish !

Nice buckle, I have a HJ buckle with the same makers mark. It seems like most of these DAF buckles I see are fake. I do like the buckle that you have posted. Ian.

Nothing wrong with that buckle! It's a nice transitional example (I'm speaking here of the markings on the buckle).
The colour of the buckle is how it should be. They were made this way. The gilt is NOT post-war and you shouldn't remove it! Looks great!

Cheers!

You gotta love these overkill Steinhauer markings, which can be also be found on HJ buckles of the time (ca. 1935/36)!
