Juergen,

Your collapsable baton looks to be pre-1945 to me. They still make these but the all steel ones with lead or steel ends to the springs are what I consider the old ones.

And thanks for Your comments so far! And how much should I pay for it if original?

Funny I just had one offered to me too from an antique guy, but I have to make an offer on it.
Whar is the ballpark on these?

I've seen these spring coshes at shows over many years. And what Jerry said makes sense.

But I've also heard rumors. Some say they were commercially made in the US, UK or Europe for use by various police depts, jailers and such.

And by a stroke of luck, the maker's name comports nicely with a IIId Reich police agency. My Dad's OSS version was nearly - if not totally - identical. But it was lost years ago when I was little so I can't check.

Anyone else hear these rumors? - which for all I know were spread by jealous dealers... Maybe an old police equipment catalog would show something. Come in Dave Cameron....

These types of spring whips or coshes or whatever you want to call them are around today. I saw one for sale 3-4 weeks ago at the Raleigh gun show. Stained black. I forget the name, but it might have been "ninja" somethingorother Big GrinBig Grin

My example is a steel tipped one that my dad brought home from a business trip to Germany in the 1950s. Marked on the end with SIPO and the DRGM, it has the leather hand strap. The SIPO models were advertised in pre-WWII German magazines and this device is described in the German weapons manuals.

In the movie "13 Rue Madelaine", a Jimmie Cagney WWII movie about the OSS operations, the same spring coshes are shown being used in an simulated OSS training operation.

I have an old sales brochure from around 1970 from the firm "INCO", P.O. Box 3111, Burbank, CA 91504, which advertises these post-war SIPO whips (6" closed, 16-1/2" open, 10 oz.) @ $19.95 retail, less 40% to dealers in lots of 10 = $11.97 each. Each one came with a leather thong; the leather thongs were green at the time, I think I might have a spare thong upstairs in a box. The brochure says that these were imported from Germany, & made under the original patent by the grandfather of the owner of Inco. Also available was a shorter version, the "Blitz" (5-1/8" closed, 13-3/4" open), @ $14.95 retail.

I had one of these that came from the Central police station in Oslo. I know for a fact that they were used in Norway by both the Norwegian and German Police. However, I have also been told that "SIPO" does not refer to the German SIPO but to the manufacturer. My understanding is that these were used before the war as well as a "crowd control" device. During the war also as a instrument of torture.

The fact that my grandfather was tortured with one of these at the same police station where mine came from, prompted me to get rid of this thing asap and it was at the time traded against two EKII.

Well I guess what we have leaned so far is: These were used and are still in use.

I would think any of the "imported" ones would by law be stamped with the country of origin.

The one I am looking at (that is identical to the one posted, but with a bit more finish) was brought back after WW2 by a US veteran, so chances are it was used in Pre-WW2 Germany.

I think it will display well with my KRIPO disk, handcuffs and other Polzei "Hardware".

Jerry, the imported ones I inspected were not marked with country of origin, but the leather thong was marked "Made in Germany", much the same as many repro HJ knives not being marked "Made in Germany" etc., (or Germany), but with the back of the black leather loop of the HJ scabbard marked as such w/country of origin.

Very intereting thread. Shows that even with as modest as item as this there's Real Knowledge wafting round these forums. (Oops - did I say WAFting?! W.A.F.s pretty darn good too...)

Anyway thanks.
