I know of one that was recently offered to someone for $ 135,000 and it was the best in the world, being totally mint. I have pictures of it but I do not have the owner's permission to show the pics. Craig's dagger is really nice but ain't mint, the grip is cracked for one thing, so I'm assuming that it probably sold for just around the $ 100,000 mark but again, these are extremelly rare and the value is in the eyes of the beholder. For some people, price is a secondary factor but thank goodness, it ain't the case for most of us.

Of course, if you want one with a plain blade (a ground Rohm one at that), then it would go for less than half that. John

If I was an appraiser on antique roadshow I would have said $100,000,00 + 0r - $15,000,00. so that was in the ballpark, just sharpening my skills. Thanks for the info.

Howard, Most dealers will never tell you the price that they actually REALLY sold the dagger for. Even if they were to tell you, there's a big chance that his price will be greatly inflated. Just imagine if the price was $ 20,000 below market value........... that would definitively affect their "paid cheque". I know for sure that one of the biggest dealer in the US has recently sold a high end dagger for $ 45000 USD and guess what, he told everyone at the Max that it went for $ 60,000 USD. Now every dealer on the planet has a starting price of $ 60,000 USD. This is how you control the market ! Dealers have learned well from the stock broker gurus. You would be amazed to see what some of the high artifacts really sell for.

Also..... If you are going to advertise the item for sale is the price to much to ask for ? Or is the item too much to price?

Pat makes a super point, also remember if one offers CASH I guarantee any high end item will sell for less than asking price!

Everyone in the militaria business is willing to take a "would ya take"....especially Mr. Gottlieb, in my personal experience. People that pay $100,000 for an SS Honor dagger have either: 1. too much money 2. no common sense 3. the ability to hold that purchase for many years as it is NOT going to be easily resalable. Some have sat for YEARS in dealers inventory. Plus..if it turns out to be a 'mega-mint' example...you can never be sure the money back guarantee will ever be honored. Remember...you have to prove it's a fake instead of the dealer proving it is correct. It happened to me and quite publicly I might add. Tread carefully in these treacherous waters. Mark

My sense is that a genuine SS Honor Dagger, in near mint shape, is probably closing in on $140,000 to $150,000.
The best one I have ever seen was 10 years or so ago and it was impeccable. Even had the gray wool(?) zipper bag. It flew out at $100,000, Cash.
I think it got resold to a dealer at a hefty profit who then sold it. Do the math.
I should have bought it. There will never be a better one in my opinion.

I would love to own one. However there is many other things I could do with a 100-150k. I guess if you can afford it you can't really go wrong as they are ultra rare.

It's all about income of scale. The guy who can buy something like that is comparable to most people spending 5 grand on an SS enlisted mans dagger.

You know, I think when you start to try and go beyond say, damask Luft/Army and Himmler blades etc, it all starts to get a bit OTT on price, and frankly a bit of a turn off! I mean US$ 100-150k for one of these things is just crazy. This hobby can be really fun and for-filling with out ever needing to go to such extravagance even if you do have that sort of money to throw at it. I mentioned in a previous thread that I once offered a similar amount of money several years ago, for the Donnitz baton (currently here in a military museum in Shropshire UK) and was "offer refused" and now on reflection I'm rather glad they did, as it would have left me seriously skint for a long long time and would not have allowed me to enjoy so much else (collecting wise) in this hobby at a far more manageable cost!.... And lets also not forget how close some copy versions of these SS/SA Honour daggers are getting to the real thing also? Given the sky high prices they make, there is every incentive for those with the skill to do it to possibly turn out examples that will one day fool us all. Then what!!! How abouth crying into your pillow about losing $100,000.00US on a dodgy SS Honour dagger?.....Sends shivers down my spine!

If money were no object I would buy one, probably the chained one!. Thing is on one hand they are expensive but on the other hand they are rare and the top of the tree in this hobby... If they were not worth the money they would never sell, basic supply and demand stuff really.

Though highly desirable, they do not sell that easily, there were 4 for sale just a month ago, one in the UK and 3 in the US. One got sold by Craig. As I've said, one of the best conditioned one in the world was offered to me not long ago and it was still for sale at the last SOS show. It was also priced well below the $ 150,000 USD mark. Of course if money was no object, I would buy one at any price but it ain't the case for 99.99 % of the people. I would also like to buy a 60 millions USD $$$$ house in Monte Carlo if I had the money but I don't how the dough.

Hello Pat...... I was in Monaco last month (family friend lives in Cannes) and it was wall to wall hookers, dodgy Rusians with dodgy fortunes, and obeese tanned posueres! I love those yachts but the people are repellent! I would rather pay top Euro not to be close to them! Cheers.

Howard, it is sad but you are absolutely right, the French Riviera isn't what it used to be. I was also there last May, visiting my family but where we live it is still very quiet and beautiful, it is just beside the Italian border in a town call Menton.

Pat, I'm pleased to say that there are indeed still some beautifull and unspoilt areas fairly close to Cannes/south cost. I have always liked the idea of retirement to St paul de Vance, but prices are totaly mad. But I'm sure you are more aware of this and the area than I....Regards

Pat- I was in Menton last November. I was staying with Scandinavian friends who have a home in the mountains outside Ventimiglia, Italy. This was my first trip to the French /Italian Riviera. Went swimming in the Mediterranean and later to the Casino in Monaco and the Royal Palace. One of my best trips ever! Speaking of Monaco, today it was voted the most expensive place in the world to buy real estate according to this news article.
