My apologies for asking about a post-war "rework", but I really need some information.

Just bought a M1 Garand National Match from an estate. Original paperwork indicates it was purchased in 1969 from the Rock Island Arsenal.

My question:

It is designated as "Condition A" on the invoice from the arsenal...

how does this rating correlate, if at all, to the Grade levels normally associated with CMP guns?

Thanks for any input.

is the rifle star guaged on the end of the barrel, an astrick stamped on the crown end of the barrel? I do not know the condition designation, it may refer the the guage of the condition of the rifle, ie, bore.

Roger, my interest is mainly the Garand rifle and I have never seen or heard of the description "Condition A". I can point you to www.scottduff.com where you can get an answer from Scott. He wrote several books on Garands, Carbines, Colt 1911 pistols and AR15/M-16 rifles.

Let us know what you turn up!

"Star Gauge" is a term applied to the 1903 Springfield. At one time they were inspected and test fired and the exceptionaly accurate ones were punched at the end of the barrel with a star.

No idea if they did it for other US service weapons.

Sorry, I was thinking of the 1903 in reference to the star guage. I do not know what the condition "a" means.

That was quick.

Sent the question to Scott Duff and got a relatively immediate, candid and cordial response...

he didn't know for sure either.

Oh well.
