I was looking through some dealer sites last night and saw a navy with what was called a "rare" golden colored knot. Does anyone know why there was a golden and a silver knot for the navy daggers and is the golden type really rare?

I have never seen an original gold colored Navy knot. I have seen both the late nylon type and the early heavy silver bullion ones age toned to LOOK like tarnished gold.

Houston is correct on this point. I have NEVER seen an original gold Navy Knot. Only golden hew tarnished silver ones (they really look gold, but are not. This can be confirmed by moving the knot to reveal the time hidden under wrap to show the silver has tarnished.) JMO,

Gold navy knots do exist, but they are extremely rare. I agree with the gentlemen above, that I have never seen an original gold portepee on a 1938 pattern Third Reich navy dagger.
I do have a 1929 pattern which has a very nice gold portepee attached. The dagger is a long pattern 29 about the same length as the 1890 cadet navy dagger. I really need a pic of a long 29 being worn.

Here is the knot. Silver work in the stem and the tape in the bottom of the acorn. Lighter in the folds but not a true silver like all the other knots.
