What can you tell me about this dagger?
I am quite interested, but know nothing about a leather handle Army.

Thanks,

For sure NO custom. See the leafing! Not the least question about army origin. Imo a parts dagger obviously post war (short after the end).

I'm curious ,why is the spiral wrap on the grip the wrong direction, its the wrap of a luft , has segments of luft, also if army, why did they bother to wire wrap it. I really think the grip was replaced by a luft grip. Just my observations,T Roll Eyes

This subject keeps being brought up year after year.

Johnson has some knowlegde of these. He had a conversaion with Mike Hanson, when Mike purchased his blue & Green grips from him.
This was 6 years ago at the MAX. They are NOT post war

Cant explain it either...The grip is wood core, fits to a tee,not a Luft swap as the lufts have a bigger midsection, this has a nice tubular look to it.They were made for some reason...what I have no idea.

Tom, do you have more pics of the blade and crossguard.

Is there a scabbard?

Still interested,

Well
Lets not label this item without proof.

So someone get Tommy to write a short note and post it for him. These are NOT post war assembled

Tom

I wish i still owned all my books and ref's

There are a few mentione in T Johnsons books of these. He has also sold a few of them.

I know Whitman has sold some also as real .

So since some guys on this site have the inside path to both of them, Please get them to write about these daggers.

I just hate to have something labled because one person doesn't like something about it. Hell post some data, not just Post War or Post war assembled.

I would love to have some honest information on the history of these.

IMO, this is quite an attractive dagger. The dark patina goes so well with the blue grip.

It seems to me that if these daggers have blue or green grips and ARE period, then the most logical assumption is that in the late war period customs grips were used on Heer daggers. Perhaps this was due to a shortage of standard heer grips and a few available left-over customs grips laying around... It is a logical possibility that a stock of extra customs grips could have been laying around since they are such a comapritively smaller organization.
The questions that I would have though are:
1) What makers have shown up with these grips??? If it were only 1 or 2 makers, I think that would lend some credibility to the possibility that these were "last-ditch-effort-pieces".
2) IF these are "last-ditch-effort" pieces, why would the solingen manufacturers dare ro stray SO far from the regualtion patern, afterall, you are going to have Heer officers confused with Customs officers with these types of daggers going around!
It seems to me that if the companies could not make a legit Heer dagger due to shortages, they would not make it at all.
3) Is there any chance that this is a "last-ditch-effort" customs dagger (rather than a Heer dagger) using late war Heer fittings (because they would be available and hardly distinguishable from customs fittings (especially for non-collectors Wink)).
To me, it would make more sence that this is a last-ditch customs than a last-ditch Heer..Opinions???

I am just throwing a few ideas out there, hope I did not say anything too dumb. I am very interested in this thread. This is a fascinating variation...
Looking forward to other thoughts....

Grip wire is still going the wrong way.I still think there were different but small and short lived Nazi orginizations that have never surfaced in the collecting field. Cool

Seems to me the customer would really be ticked off if he was given this. As we know the catalogs didnt show these so what would the guy expect? The dagger he saw in some reference. If I ordered an Army and recieved that, Id send it back.T

Ed- Good point about the wire, I overlooked that...
What small TR organizations might you be referring to???

Tiep- I agree, it is too far from the standatd version to be accepted as a "necessary replacement". But I may be wrong, I am interested to hear all opinions!

At Tom's request, I have moved his For Sale item here so that all members can participate in the discussion, not just Premium Members.

The item is still for sale, but the thread will not be deleted after 30 days as there is interesting info here.

I dont know too much about these, but the scabbard looks more army than customs (obviously), so dont you think there could be a possibility it is a first model railway, with some personal choice or last minute-panic grip? I know, the wire still goes in the wrong direction, though. Cant explain that...

I bought this Army dagger a couple of years ago as is to get some parts off of it because of the grip (blue leather with wire). I figured someone just changed it out to doctor it up a little. starky
