Went to an auction today and this wasn't listed, I got it cheap, is this original leather scabbard looks like it has always been in this scabbard. Mike

Very interesting scabbard indeed. Is there any arsenal markings or a date on it? If it's an original it should be marked by the arsenal, most 03 bayonet scabbards that I have had in the past have been marked RIA and a date, even though this is for a krag it shoud be marked in a simalar fashion, Looks like you got a nice one. My thought is for a mounted calvalry soldier, just a guess by the construction of it.

The leather scabbard is for the picket pin that was strapped to the horse equipments. These bayonets are sometimes found in these picket pin holders but the bayonet was issued with a steel scabbard.

Yes, as ORPO said the "scabbard" is a cavalry picket pin holster. Bannerman's is the culprit of this marriage of historical incorrectness. I see many of these combinations and I even had a guy swear up and down that it was right. This is what happens when a large amount of scabbardless bayonets meet a pile of useless picket pin holsters Smile! At $25.00 this is quite a buy! Cheers to all---Jeff/Tenmile Creek Antiques
