The etching on the blade is very faint. The lug is non-operational (just for design).

Great piece, I have always wanted one with that style of hilt. Maybe someday. Thanks for the photos.

Jim,
A very nice bayonet collection!
Here is another example of your stag grip bayonet with the slanted pommel.

Nice bayonet. Were these actually produced in the TR era or are they from earlier times. I would be inclined to believe they were not TR produced judging by the shape. Would this be a KS98 as well? JAN

Jan,
These dress bayonets with the thin guard and/or slant pommel are from the time of the Weimar Republic but probably carried over into early NS Zeit I suspect. They are a private purchase (Extra-Seitengewehr) form of the KS98. Some KS98 were manufactured and issued during the TR but they will have property markings on them while I have never seen an example of these earlier bayonets with property markings. Of course, we should never say never but I have not seen one.

Thanks a lot for your thorough answer to my question. I learned a lot from it. As a result, I will also be on a lookout for one of these in the future. JAN

Some German references identify this type bayonet as being for the Customs service but I have not seen any period catalog photo/info that would verify this.

Jeremy, Most of my collection is still packed as I am still moving back into my house so am not able to provide you pictures of the knot. Most of my S84/98 are matching numbers. Jim
