Hi all:

I just watched an ebay (Yeah, I know) auction where a bayo went for nearly $800 U.S.

The bayonet was close to mint, matching and a S/155. (A lot of you probably followed this auction, too Wink)

The bayonet had special matching markings on the scabbard and the guard. The mark was O.4026k.

Why did this bayonet attract so much interest and such a high price? Was the extra mark a unit marking of some significance. I don't know anything about unit markings.

I'd appreciate it if anyone had any light to share on the subject. Thanks!

I didn't see the auction you're referring to. Could you post a link?

The markings sound like naval markings.

The question posted mentions that the bayonet is marked "O" for Ostsee, a Kriegsmarine marking. It also mentions that the waffenampt marks are an early type so I guess it's rare. Combat pieces are not my interest but I can appreciate such rare marks. Maybe one of the other bayo guys can chime in.

Kriegsmarine pieces are rare and usually pretty rough condition-wise.
To me, $800 would not be out of line for one as nice as this one appears to be. The frog is frosting on the cake!!

the bayonet in question was matching numbers and
matching KM numbers. It was also in excellent condition. Pretty rare.
