Hey Guys,

I`ve just purchased this beautiful slant grip unmarked Heer dagger and was wondering whether anyone could tell me who the maker of the cross guard is to determine the maker of this dagger?
I am of the opinion that this may well be an early Hoerster, but I could be mistaken?

Also, the potential manufacturer of the scabbard would be great to know, or is it a generic?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated Wink

It is fitted with the transitional or 2nd pattern Holler crossguard, which is basically a modified E-Pack design. The stamped eye of the eagle compared to the lazy of the E-Pack is the best way to determine the difference.
I confess to only ever seeing this pattern on daggers with a later grip, however the rest of the fittings including the scabbard also look like Holler.

Here is another thread worth a read on early Hollers > Hollers
Check the central section of the blade and see if the crossgrain runs vertically compared to the blade edges which should have the more traditional horizontal grain. Its not always the case with Holler armies but interesting to find all the same.

I have to say as well it is an unusual guard to find with a slant grip. Also IMO the single placed center screw on the scabbard is strange as well coupled with the slant grip. Does the blade have a tapered tang? That pommel sure looks like a Pack.Throat also has a big overlap?

Seems all to point to Holler-Holler enhanced Pack guard-Pack Pommel and Holler scabbard still curious all seems to be good as long as that blade has a tapered tang IMO.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the comments. Very interesting to find out that its proberbly a Holler? To answer the questions, I haven`t yet received it, so I cannot say whether its got a tapered tang or not? Regarding the crossgrain, I`d also have to check that once it arrives. I dont think this is a fiddled piece because of the source of where it comes from? Non the less, I`ll be inspecting it closer on arrival Wink
Will post my findings then.

Thanks once again for all the input.

Dion: All comments made thus far are right on in my opinion, including yours. Probably a Holler. However, I have also seen that guard on very late Horsters a lot. Perhaps you have too. I would be as curious as everyone else regarding the tang?

Have an unmarked dagger with what looks to me is the same crossguard eagle (stamped eye).
BUT with pure ivory grip, a distinguishable, bulbous ferrule, "normal" crossgraining on the blade (also the middle segment), "normal" tang and a generic scabbard.

Well, I received my dagger and I must say, Its 1000 times nicerthan on the pics!! Razz
And, once again, I think I`m the first person to have loosened that pommel! I did find a tapered tang, however, it looks to have been ground to fit the grip. But it is a typical tapered tang. I only lifted the grip about an inch or so because I didnt wanna loosen the portepee too much as it looks to have been with this dagger from the beginning, and I dont really wanna change the way it wraps around the grip and X-guard. I couldn`t take any pics because of this, but the main thing is, it is tapered!

Wotan, beautiful dagger you have there!! Wanna swap?? hahaha....
