Hello:

I am posting these pictures for a fellow collector that I have purchased a dress bayonet from recently. He has quite a SA collection and sent me some pictures. I specialize more in bayonets so could anyone offer any comments on this dagger? Also what would be a fair offer for purchase?

Received some more photos from the owner today and some History. He purchased this dagger from a friend in 1972. The friend and his father had owned it since 1960. The father did do some polishing to the blade and touchup paint to the scabbard. Hope these new photos help and would like some more input. Thanks in advance.

You need one of the Rohm experts to comment on this but as someone who got burnt on a bad one of these I have some concerns about this.

1. Scabbard re paint (might be a later scabbard?)
2. Original SA Dagger but if you look at the front of the blade and the makers mark they look evenly worn, but the dedication looks very shiny and fresh.
3.look at the shiny grinding it literally looks like it was done yesterday!. If you have a good look at it it really looks it is on top of all the rust and inperfections around it. On original examples they show even wear, water marks, greying and rust the same as the rest of the blade.
4. Look at all the circular scratching around the dedication. This is done on the fake one I have to hide the fact it was re ground with a fake dedication.
5. In the last pic you can see deep watermarks and imperfections on the blade.. they dont really seem to show in the dedication. IMO its like it has been put on top.

I would not buy it

I have a standard SMF in my collection. It is usual on all dedication daggers that I have seen that the MM is much closer to the X guard than on a non dedicated dagger. You may also find that the obverse inscription is a little further away than is normal. So do a comparison.

It is not 100% but can be quite accurate. The number of times I have seen a very nice EP&S ground to buggery in an attempt to pass it off as a dedicated dagger......the one thing they cannot easily move is the MM.

The only other time the MM is closer to the X guard is when it is a transitional and the RZM mark is in the usual position.

This could just be a bad flash photo not doing the inscription justice. My suggestion take it outside on a nice bright day with no artificial lighting. That way the guys in the know will have something better to judge.

The scabbard should be anodised.It does look to be painted.

Meantime as far as the above SMF partial Rohm is concerned, nothing can really be deduced from the photos provided, as Frank mentions, it would help to see nice clear shots of the blade

Your correct and I stand in the corner, though I wonder how many there are with similar traits. The majority I see are all closer to the X guard.

I just peeked at my Wustof partial to compare the etch, need better pics .
