I was given a German dagger by my grandfather back in the 1970's. It was lost long ago, thrown away when the bakelite cracked and fell off (sigh), but I would really like to replace it.
He claimed that it was a German WW2 bayonet, but looking at examples online, I don't think it had the tell-tale button or slit.
As I remember it was very similar to the Hitler Jugend knife, but had a longer and thinner blade. Also no "diamond" on the handle, but rather a sort of monogram (or could it have been a stag?). This is the only picture I have of it, sorry, I know it's not much to go on.

Since you believe there was no mortise button, maybe it was a fire bayonet?

WW1 fighting knife ??? Hard to tell the length in that photo.

That’s the first fire bayonet I ever owned, the first of maybe 135-140 of them.

That was a fine first Fire for sure. I'm sure they just went up in quality from there.

Tony,,,,welcome to the forum.... - you were real young there.. The length just doesn't seem there to be a bayo of any type... I think Ed773 has it,,,,there was a fighting knife , black handles, no markings usually and the shape of a dress bayo just smaller... All my fighting knife collection is gone.. Anyone have one to post,,,I really think thats it..

see a broken side plate with the rivet hanging down - see circle. Also the point of the knife - red line.

They certainly did Ed, a small oval logo and a large logo too. I owned both types back in the day. Fairly uncommon maker in fire bayonets.

My list keeps getting longer.
Another to look for.
I have several Heer Krebs, but no Luftwaffe yet.
A few Heer dress Bayonets, no Fire.

Ed, I’ve owned a couple of Krebs Luft daggers. I still own a Voos pattern Luft by CJ Krebs, really nice one too.

From memory, there were four variants of the Krebs maker mark, Johnny Z has them all represented.

That is correct, there are four. I have looked at Johnny Z's often on the maker mark thread.
I just think Carl Krebs took the time when he did a lot of daggers. The fit of the grip to the Pommel and Ferrule on both my Heer's is perfect.
Hope to get a Luft some day.

The one you show by it self is a nice fighting knife. No, not MINT, but I like the ones that have seen the combat, not a shelf the entire war life.

Yes, both mine have buttons, but I do not know if some came without them.
If they all had buttons, then I would guess Fire bayonet. But to me it does not look 10" long blade in the photos.

Some of those black handled fighting knifes didn't have buttons..

the first photo with the 4 knives is mine,,,the 2nd photo is from a topic I searched 'fighting knives'.. One topic had member 'Seany' with part of his collection ,,about 50 knives ,,,bet there was one in there!

Well, he has not come back to see our posts ....

Any responsible grandfather would have given his grandson a DJ knife in my opinion.

The other stuff is way to heavy and could damage the kids teeth and jaw...

I seem to remember it only having one, sorry I don't know what it's called in English, blade protection "horns", and no eagle head. But I could be wrong...

It was such a long time ago that I really can't be sure ... But I think I would have remembered the eagle head.

Sorry about that, I ended up in a hospital for a while.

That's how I remember the back end, but the blade is too wide and has the wrong shape.

This is actually exactly like I remember it, but with a plain end, no eagle head. But I could be wrong ...
