The U.S. army’s 30th infantry division was known as “Roosevelt’s SS” because of how hard they fought against the 1st SS after the invasion at Normandy. This is a rare full enamel ring of the 30th (the 3 x’s) inside the “O” and the “H” for “old hickory,” the nickname for another tough wartime man and US president, Andrew Jackson. Most were originally national guardsmen from the Carolinas and of course, Tennessee, the home of Andrew Jackson. I’ve posted it alongside a (likely repro/fantasy) “SS” 30th infantry patch. It’s been discussed on USA militaria forums that there were a few hand embellished patches with the “SS” stitched on in runic style as the German SS as an honorific nom de guerre from their adversary.

the patch looks of good quality. The SS and FDR look added later.

Hi Dave, found it at a Butler, PA antiques mall- just sitting there with a bunch of patches and insignia, collar disks, miscellaneous USA ww2 smalls. Couldn’t believe it!

Wow, beautiful old hickory division ring and interesting info. Have a relative who was in OHD in ww2 in Germany.
