I have been on a roll with youtube documentaries about some facets of war that I have never explored up until now, namely, the Napoleonic campaigns and Alexander the Great.
Sure, everyone knows their names but not many can go into much detail of precisely why people still know their names after centuries have past, and there is a very good reason for this. Their campaigns were just jaw dropping in scale, duration, intensity and geography. Napoleon conquered damn near all of what now is Europe, and well into Russia. His allies of one year were enemies of the next [with the constant of England always being an enemy because the British couldn't stand up to him on land, and he could not match the British on the sea] As in WW1 & 2, the channel pretty much saved their asses from a nasty invasion., and the RN ensured this was so.
Never knew that Russia really invaded France first, never knew he actually made it to Moscow but found it barren and destroyed ,,, And thereupon embarked on his well known and disastrous retreat.
Never knew the details of Waterloo, which was his attempted comeback after months in exile after his 1st defeat - Just so many battles and details over the course of a full decade, very very brutal fighting with upwards of 1,000,000+ dead, and all of that well before the era of modern weaponry.

Alexander, hard to know where to even start, I suppose years can be devoted by historians studying his mind boggling decade long campaign and nearly innumerable battles, which stretched from eastern Europe to the mid east all the way into what is now Afghanistan/Pakistan and then into India, where he was forced by near mutiny by an exhausted army to trek back west only to die barely into his 30's of a mystery illness. Loved and hated, revered and reviled, hailed and cursed as a devil, deity and military genius, the resting place of his bones will never be known.

Crusades also very interesting and sobering, started getting into that but I feel as though I am trying to absorb too much too soon.

I like a good movie but to me, this stuff is far better than any movie could possible be. This outfit is one of the best among many top notch military history sources https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvPXiKxH-eH9xq-80vpgmKQ

I love old movies, they always show good ones at this time of year. I like new movies too but there's so few that are even worth the 2 hours to sit through them. The Youtube vids on historical topics are terrific too, I listen/watch them when doing chores and it's quite rewarding to multitask!

Dave,

Saw Dirty Dozen a few weeks ago, I'm good for 2-3 times a year typically. Can't say I've seen Cross of Iron but I have to find it.

I'm a bit jaded on most of the 60's-70's war movies like Eagles Dare because its too much like actually watching fiction, though granted they are not based off true stories.
Clint single handedly mowing down entire platoons of Nazis in secession was great to see as a teen, not so much now ... And when the pretty blonde starts mowing them down as well, I start to wonder why I am wasting my time watching this. Also the obligatory and highly corny love interests they always had to throw in, really can't take it anymore. In fairness, Eagles is extremely plot heavy with many twists and turns that you really have to pay attention to, now that I liked.

Dirty Dozen was Ok, probably been well more than a decade since I have seen it so I am due. The entire premise is feasible at least, as was the execution.

I liked Kellys Heros, which was an irreverent movie and made no pretext of being taken very seriously. Guns of Navarone was Ok as well.

I'd say my 2 favorites from that era, much more to my style and liking than the ego driven comic book style most of them were, is The Blue Max [granted, had a strong love interest throughout, but was actually intriguing and central to the entire movie] and ,,, Don't even remember the name but it starred Frank Sinatra of all people, trapped on an island with Japanese during WW2, started off trying to kill eachother, learned to get along and even become friends, and ended up, yep, trying to kill eachother.

Honorable mention to Hell in the Pacific, very unique in that the entire film had a cast of 2 - One of them was Lee Marvin so you know it gets pretty gritty ,,, Definetly no love interests in that one.

True, but I think he realized that, if he didn't sell it, it would be forcibly taken - Both France and England realized that their days as overlord of the American continent were numbered, and they proceeded to concentrate on destroying each other.

I am going to be watching this tonight. It is a true story and was made in 1957. Heard good reviews. Hardy Kruger was in the SS doing WW2. He just passed away in January.

Got to see Top Gun part 2! Boot leg copy from a friend!

Now the quality was not great but!

I thought it was decent! But did not have music Like Danger Zone playing! Not sure why!

Val had a cameo spot! Shame! He can't talk!

They tried to copy some of the scenes but like most 2nd part movies fall short!

But its better than nothing!

Tom Cruise is not my favorite actor and over 30 yrs later not the same punch as 1st!

I am waiting to see Grey Hound with Tom Hanks, and I admit Elvis!

saw something the other night 'The Eichman Show' [or something close]... It was about how they set up and produced the Adolf Eichman trial ... Not too bad actually..

Also, 'Cypress Hill: insane in the brain' [again or something close].. That was very good..

and a movie about A.I.,,, Ex Machina',,,that was pretty good too. Oh yeah,,caught 'Von Ryans Express',,,,thats always a good one to see..

I liked Ex Machina!

The recently released The Gray Man on Netflix is good despite the reviews.
