Hi all,
I have had this battered old thing for many years. A while ago, someone on another forum told me that it's a known fantasy design. I have never seen another one like it so I held onto it because it was the first ring I ever bought... so sentimental value if nothing else...

What do you guys think? The silver content mark, seen faintly in the last photo, is 900. The enamel is chipped but it looks like real enamel to me.

Much obliged,
Stephen

,,,,ok,,, It looks like real enamel,,is it? Do the runes stand proud of the black field? Is that the SS motto on the band sides?

I believe it is real enamel but it's badly worn and chipped. Yes, the SS motto is engraved on the sides but, as you can see, it is pretty worn too. Is this a known pattern? I would love for it to be genuine. Thanks, Gaspare.

Thanks, Evgeniy. Happy to try but what is ‘shots bag - macro mode’? Also what are runs? I assume you want more detailed pics with better lighting.

Bigger shots I believe is what he means (macro- larger). Runs= runes.

S. , IF, if it has the SS motto on the sides it is a early copy . and probably with real enamel. It looks like the runes are 'proud' / raised above the field which would also not make it period

Thanks Gaspare. The motto is on the sides, albeit faint now. The runes are proud but I‘m not sure if this is because the enamel is so badly chipped. Still, if it's a copy (early or otherwise), who cares? Shame! It was my first ring. How ironic is that? First Third Reich ring, first dud! smile

Many of the very early copies had real enamel... Even though postwar thats a nice ring. Andy used to say we should keep these early mistakes,,that they become our 'tuition' of learning!
In the future with a little more wear on the sides I'll probably end up the star of ones collection!!

We laugh about it, but it happened several times that fake HR were worn down and then they surfaced on market as originals with COA too!

I had a closer look at this ring with a magnifier this evening. In fact, the runes are (or were originally) flush with the enamel. The only parts where they are proud are between the runes and in the top right. These bits of the enamel are clearly damaged.

I wonder if anyone has a period ad for this pattern or if anyone has photos of an original. Thanks all for your input.

You will never find an advertisement nor anything for a SS ring with the SS motto on it.. Yes there are close patterns but no such ring exists during the 3rd reich era with the motto on it...

Here is another early SS ring with motto. A 2 piece, with real enamel. Fooled many a collector for many many years..

Ha ha! Yep, I used to have one of those too as you may recall. It was returned to the seller.

One other question though: while rings with the SS motto may not have been advertised, is it not possible that some such rings were designed and ordered privately?

S. , First you would have to find a jeweler that would make you a custom ring with the motto on the outside. Not impossible... So yes you could probably have someone make you a custom ring with the motto on the outside, cast, made from parts or engraved on outer band... I have seen rings with the motto engraved on the inner band which shouldn't have been a problem.

In the 20s, Hitler and the Nazis would do anything to have their ideology, emblems ,propaganda put out there. You could get swastika / organizational rings, cufflinks, tie clips, watch fobs even womens make up mirrors with AHs image or swastikas on them and many more products...
As soon as they secured power in 1933 the laws came out , patriotic items became 'kitch' [cheap junk] and it all slowly stopped. They even tried to stop skull rings!. But they and a few others survived..

As far as Hitler,,,,ever see the 1000s of sheets of unused AH stamps?. Well he got a royalty [$] for every single one printed,,not sheet, each stamp! The swastika, runes, various mottos even though developed by private citizens had become sole ownership of the party..
Years ago in interviews done by mail I asked about motto rings AH head rings etc. The 3 responses I got was 'it just wasn't worth it', one said that even IF you could get thru all the paperwork, pay the royalty for a batch of rings the party thought they owned you. Inspections, their rules for advertisement, suggest retail price, list of whos buying etc... - No profit in it.. and our pieces being private purchase thats the magic word guys,,profit.. No profit the ring wouldn't be made... Sorry for the history rant guys,,,enjoy your weekend!!

You don‘t rant often, Gaspare, but when you do, it is an informative rant. Thanks again for improving my education. Have a good weekend too.
