Last month I went back to visit some HS friends in NJ. While I was there I ran into a family member of one of my friends who was killed in Viet Nam. This person asked if I was still into military collecting. When I said yes, they offered me their relatives coffin flag. I thought it was odd but went over to their house and picked it up . The flag was in the original plastic covering and inside the issue carboard box. I've seen many coffin flags but not undisturbed like this. I'm not sure what to do with it yet. I'll post photos later. I'll have to block out the handwritten name .

Here are the photos. First is the original issue box, with the name blocked out. Second is the protective plastic bag with the flag inside, unopened or unfolded since the late 60's.

If this is your friends flag, why would you be unsure what to do with it.
It is a sacred item, one that your friend gave his life for. Honor it. Remember him.
How could you let it go.
It was a once in a lifetime chance.

I agree with Ed... Not sure if its proper to fly these flags [?] If so why not fly it.

There is no rule in the book forbidding the coffin flag from flying.
Most Vets will say to respect the flag by display only, to honor the one who gave all.
I do not have a coffin flag that I know of. But I have over 40 US flags, a lot of 9 1/2 footers.
I would buy or make a flag case, and start a grouping of the Vet, if he was a friend of mine.
I lost several friends in Nam. Have thought of this often, but would want the original flag.

I have my Father's flag, WWII veteran, cased. I also have 3 flags given to us from Troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, all cased. I gave other flags from the same Troops that I passed on the Girl Scout and Boy Scouts who did not have a flag for their meetings. I have a flag flying from the front of my house.
I've never had any intention to sell or trade this flag. I just thought it would be interesting for other collectors to see a complete package.
