Enclosed is a Carter EB33 Ersatz that i have never come across so far. Interesting handle and cross guard. This bayonet is only supposed to fit a Gew98. Note the blade tang only goes a short way into the grip.

Aushilfe SG98 would be correct designation, as Carter is partly wrong with ersatz, this designation was probably never used by german in war period. I noted only german collectors. b.r.Andy

Do you have information to support the Aushilfe SG98?

F.Ruediger books, various german forums with their experts, the ersatz nomenclature is a austrian term not german. Germans didnt use the term Bajonett only for socket bayonets, for normal bayonets were always used the term Seitengewehr. The added numbers as EB33 (Ersatz Bayonet) has nothing with real designation used by Germans it was created by Carter in his books to catalogise the items. b.r.Andy
