Nice job of picture taking. I don't like the look of that scabbard fit either. The bottom grip profile and the scabbard lip appear to be quite diferent. This also appears to be an early dagger that's pehaps been mated with a later scabbard even though the scabbard looks to be anodized. Jim

If it is a very tight fit and with the amount of the gap.It may very well be a changed scabbard.I do not think there is anyway too know for sure. The patinia matching is a good sign it has been that way for a long time.

Everyone over at WAF said not to worry as it is so slight, and Ive been looking at other Eickhorns and SAs too and several have this evenly spaced middle gap.Is this ok or is it definately a scabbard swap? They seem to think it probably came from factory like thi sas its not as obvious as a switch? The patina matches well.

A slight gap may be acceptable, but this one does not look right. It's too wide and the lower guard contour does not seem to fit the throat contour. Also, an overly tight fit is highly unusual on an early political dagger. If it concerns you, return it, because it will always concern you.

I have seen dagger with more gap between scababrd and crossguar and there were directly from the family of the SA-man. In my opinion it COULD be the right scabbard.

I noticed also on the upper Scabbard mount across from the ring the screw is not in all the way in and not straight. From what I can see in the photo.

North of 55 is right! It seems that the screw is a little out,,Examine the whole dagger "closely". Look for turning scratches or gouges on top of the screw and below it. If that is the case, then someone before you switched your upper scabard fitting. You will be able to tell a difference between surface scratches ( That comes from normal wear ) and the heavier scratches that I mentioned above. Also check the top of your crossguard, where the tang nut is, to see if it has been opened. Another indication iof that is a circular swirl mark that it might have been opened. Nice dagger though from what I can see. Best Larry

It's only a guess, but it could be the original scabbard was missing or damaged. Someone wanted the scabbard to match the dagger in its fine condition. Unfortunately, they didn't match up. He may have tried to put the original throat and upper fitting on the "new" scabbard, but the contour of the upper edge of the scabbard may not have accomodated the original throat and upper fitting. In any case, I think you were wise to return it.
