Has anyone else noticed that a LOT of SA, NSKK, and SS daggers are being offered without the hanger lately.
Just seems to me there are way more than usual being offered for sale without the leather hanger.
I do know some are lost to time, but some really nice daggers are seeming to loose there hangers, and there are a LOT of hangers for sale alone.
Seems more and more of the collecting community are dismantling history for profit, what a shame.

Yes,

And it not just lately. The proportion of daggers sold without hangers ( that included Luft, Heer, Navy, etc as well) has been increasing for years. The only one seen in quantity these days are the short SA hangers. The short NSKK hangers are being sold as SS hangers.

And, as you say, there are separate hangers for sale. They are not cheap and the SS vertical hangers are very hard to find. The price of a good SS vertical hanger is well over $500.

I have my doubts about how much history is actually being dismantled. I have only two SS daggers where I am certain that the hanger is original to the piece.

Seany,

Greed ? I don't see it myself.

Those hangers have always had a value. That value has increased over time along with that of the daggers they go on. Look at the shows you go to and at dealer webs sites and you will see that they are very hard to find. Rarer in most cases than the daggers themselves. Try finding a good ordinary SS vertical hanger.

Why are they rare ? Part of the answer is leather deteriorates if it is not cared for. Another part is that the soldiers that took them as trophies did not seem to value them very much. Lot of those photos with a Tommy or a GI with a dagger stuck in his belt almost never had the hanger.
