Hello UngernSternberg, first let me welcome you to the forum and your first post!

Luftwaffe generals degens are a minefield as EICKHORN has produced them after the war nearly (or even exactly) 1:1 with lot of surplus parts. Out of interest I have had several discussions with very experienced collectors and dealers concerning how to detect an original one and really no one could tell me sure indications.
I for myself would check the fixation of the eagle, minute details of the hand chiseling especially in regegions where proposed fakes would show only casting and I especially would check the blade etching and blueing.
And I personaly would buy one only out of the family of the former wearer.

This all said, your pics are much to few and much less detailed to do any statement.
Regards,

Hi Wotan,

Thanks for your response. An individual is attempting to get me to consign this sword for them, but nothing about the details add up - the blade inscription is first-pattern, yet that Eickhorn mark is only found on second-pattern blades, as is that handle. The scabbard doesn?t go with this sword (nearest I can tell, it?s from an early 20th century Imperial German sword). The overall details are also extremely shoddy compared to known authentic examples. No amount of showing them evidence from books and and previous discussions on collectors? forums is convincing then. Very frustrating.

I think the very same degen was offered very recently at a scandinavian auction house, but it did not reach the minimum reserve at the auction.
If the lower scabbard mounts are marked with the number 1 I am sure it is the same.

Hi Trigger,

There are no marks on the scabbard, and it seems (based on the frog clip and mounts) that it's not original to the sword anyway.

The scabbard above looks like the one on Tom J's site.
Not saying one way or another, just look alike.
