I am certain that some of our members have taken the plunge and have a computer with Windows 7.

Reviews? Problems? Thoughts?

Thanks
Dave

The most stable O/S I have ever used. I am using the 64bit version and it makes Vista look poor in comparison. The taskbar tabs takes some getting used to, as the quicklaunch function has gone and I recommend that you make sure your PC hardware is up to the job of running it like it deserves, i.e RAM, processor and graphics etc.
A slow system would struggle to run it. Its a little more intensive than Vista.
Not one blue screen since the install, whereas Vista hated me!.
All programs I ran on Vista, run on WIN 7 without any problems and with the bonus of DX11, IE8 and WMP11

DX11 = Direct X ( Graphics interface from Microsoft )
IE8 = Internet Explorer 8
WMP11 = Windows Media Player 11

Sorry, computer speak, I even find myself abreviating my name in e-mails Big Grin.
Nothing drastically new or ground-breaking in Windows 7 but the whole platform just feels alot more stable and coupled with the new versions of the above it runs everything straight from the install.
Minimal updates required, all codecs included and all optimized for 64 bit processing.
In lamens terms.......everything loads and runs much faster.

My only gripe was that Microsoft did not bundle an e-mail program ( AT ALL ! ). You need to download Windows Live mail seperately, and for those used to using Microsoft mail like me, getting used to and setting up a new e-mail program was a pain.

What if you're using a 3rd Party email program such as Cox's as I am?

Simply put, I love it! It's got the stability and friendliness of Windows XP with the new look of Vista. I ran the release candidate for months and never had any trouble whatsoever. I would certainly recommend it.

If you're using a 3rd party email program, you'll be fine. For anyone who doesn't have one, there are plenty of free ones. Thunderbird by Mozilla is well-respected: http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/

Tbird is great, thats all I ever use.

Will likely update to W7 once my hard drive finally dies, I think its in its death throes as we speak.

Computers!

My main rig screwed the pooch so I take it to the Geek Squad for the final word. They said, "it doesn't seem to work".. So I decided to buy a new one. I tore my old one apart and blew it all out and put it back together and it still didn't work, it wouldn't boot, it wouldn't even turn on.. So I said to heck with it and went back to work on the new one and about fifteen minutes later, the old one starts up on it's own, booted up and now works perfectly.. The Geeks took me for $140.

You are right about the Geek Squad. I have asked a few questions in the last few years and they have not had as good answers as I can find on-line.

I wouldn't recommend the geek squad to clip a dogs toenails.

My sister had a problem with her computer, ordinarily I would have had a look, but was busy with work.
So she took it there, they told her it was a basket case, gave her some ridiculous repair estimate of $800, and told her shes better off just getting another computer.
They made her feel like they would do her a big favor by letting her just leave her piece of junk computer with them, so she abandoned it to them, and she got another computer.

When she told me that, I went and got her paperwork and demanded that they give me the computer, after much ado they finally did.

The problem was that it continuously rebooted,no matter what you did, it was locked in a rebooting cycle, never actually booting to the OS.
Probably could have found a cure, but I just reloaded windows, and the computer is perfectly fine.
I ended up giving it to a single mom friend of mine who really needed a computer, and them jackals at geek squad probably would have sold it for $200-$300.

I am running W7 64 bit Ultimate.

It is without a doubt much better than vista and XP pro. I had a 64 bit system configured with 32 bit XP. I finally have the PC working as it should.

I am running a water cooled engine in a Mozart Tx case. Using a quad core intel 3GHz, 8 gig crucual RAM, 4 Tbytes storage, ASUS Extreme Gamer MB, ATI 4870 X2, XiFi Extreme Pro SC and a dell 30 inch monitor.

I am just about to install a new LG blue ray writer DL. There is a new ATI card out that stonks the hell out of my X2 but I am going to wait fot the X2 version of it before I swap out.

It also uses less power so I will become more ECO friendly and do my bit for global warming. In fact I get so much heat from the Monitor and system I have never used the radiator in my study. In the summer I have to have an AC unit running in the room to keep the ambient temp at around 18C. It is a 12000 BTU unit, smoking.

Fortunately i've never had to resort to one of these questionable operations. I've usually been able to find answers online or have a friend help out when I've had problems.
I just upgraded to Windows 7 and it's been a challenge because I was going from 2000. I think I'm over the hump and glad I made the upgrade.

I have vista on 2 of my laptops and hate it! Tried to install xp on them but cannot find all the drivers for things such as built in webcam and a few others. I studied window7 and they said it was just a better version of vista? If vista and windows7 are so good why are so many of the computer companies putting xp back on their computers. IMHO XP home is the best OS there ever was.
