no such things as an official SS ring... The SS Totenkopf Honor Ring was a gift from Himmler to special 'friends', early SS members , SS who met certain criteria.

A 'blackie' - Black enamel SS runic ring was private purchase. You could buy them sometimes from official uniform supply stores but still a private purchase type thing. You could buy it for yourself,,or get it as a gift from loved ones. IF you had the money you could have one..

Many years ago I was lucky enough to interview a period retail worker. And I asked him could someone that wasn't SS buy a SS ring? He answered,,"why would someone do that??"

"why would someone do that??"

Same reason why some folks try to pass themselves off as outlaw bikers, CIA agents or Special Forces operators - To give themselves an aura of badness, power and mystique that they don't really have.
I have no doubt there was posers back then, not near as pervasive as today, granted. I imagine Himmler would have been none too pleased if someone was caught impersonating an SS man.

if they where all made to order by different jewellers with different designs to the shanks ,it would be pretty impossible to exact date them, unlike the honer rings

Imho I can understand the incredulity on behalf of the jeweler...for the poseur - that would be playing a VERY dangerous game, impersonating an ss Mann..,I don't think these rings were cheap either, and outside perhaps of the braggadocio of a young HJ man or a young soon-to-be soldier trying to impress a girl- I think that in the fervor and terror of the completely controlled police state, with SD and gestapo everywhere--this would be a very rare move. In fact, I imagine jewelers turning down the requests and money for fear of the police or SS finding out who made the ring for the pretender. Im willing to extend the real possibility that it happened... but you could probably count those occasions on one hand. Just my opinion, however. I was not there so I could never claim to know for sure!

in conversation he went on to say that everyone,,man, woman, child belonged to the military or paramilitary group of some kind.!

Civil, public workers, factory.. everyone had some kind of uniform! some emblem, insignia etc.
People were proud what they belonged to and bought their organizations emblem as either a ring, tie clip, cufflinks, stic pin, watch fob, cigg case. You could get all those things with any military, para military, factory logo, civil emblem on them. Don't think a HJ kid would be buying a SS ring,, or DAF worker buy a SS ring or SA etc.
Maybe like you guys are saying there could be or maybe was a 'poser' a 'wanna be' that did but I don't think there were many!

I would guess that many were made in the 1930s.

hay day years for our organizational rings we love to collect are all about , late 1920s to 1942. Skulls sold well through out and probably some of the last pieces manufactured/sold.

Yes.
Like other well known patterns too.
