Gaspare,
That was in basic training - Ft. Dix - January 1964. They used temp ranks with the trainees.
Andy,
M-14. Nice rifle.

19 years old ,,,,...Names get thrown around, but when you see the soldier, put a face to the name, and just really at the beginning of his life... So much he had to do, and experience. Everything we all take for granted. You got it Andy,,these guys ARE the true American heroes. Either from a draft or volunteer,,these guys went and served,,,for us. Bob,, thanks for your service, and condolences and thanks to your cousins family for his service from all of us here at GDC...

Beyond comprehension for anyone who didn't go through that. Kids [and parents] that were 13/14 in 1964 lived with Vietnam for years on end hanging over their heads, 4 years later the kid is 18, drafted and dead, gone. Such a terrible waste of life and in the end, we were not fighting for a just cause and the sacrifices were in near complete total vain.
I watched a docu about Hamburger Hill - NVA occupied it and the generals wanted them gone so they moved in a force they thought would be up to the task. Force they sent was no where near up to the task so reinforcements were sent in. We got chewed up bad with over 70 KIA in a few days and hundreds wounded, in the end we kicked them off the hill - Then a couple weeks later, we left and NVA reoccupied the hill. All that life wasted literally for nothing, really sickening and heads should have rolled for those giving orders for pointless fiascos like that. It was almost as if they didn't have anything better to do with their raw material [human lives] at hand, so they thought they had better do something, anything, else they'd look to their superiors as if they weren't hungry enough for action. Basically to feed their egos and vanity and to pad their military resume, they squandered lives.
But none of this takes away from men like Redsled and his cousin [RIP], they served their country at the level where it really counts, and a different time different place could have been me or anyone else.
Doug
