Jo:

When you look at the skull under the tank, you should see two sets of teeth.. your picture makes it look like there are only the upper teeth and the lower ones are more of a solid mass.

Maybe you sent Wayne a better picture of this part of the etch?

Jo,

John has a point with respect to the lower row of teeth. In Wayne's book, they're more defined. In your pic, they look less detailed. Maybe lowering the resolution to fit the site's requirements lessened the visual detailing of that part.

The other interesting thing I notice is the pennant in the tanker's hands. Is it supposed to be solid or have a cross in it?

There do exist legit varations of this tank etch. They are shown in waynes book. What I do not like is that the blade looks etched after plating which is generally improper for EICKHORN, but it could be the pics only.
Was this bayonet auctioned at a german website?

Hand inspection would tell the tale. A look at the reverse side of the rivets would also be helpful

No - this one was not auctioned at militaria321. The seller there is a very doubtful one...

hi jo, there are a couple of differences to my piece but...
as i know EIckhorn has got 5-6 different Etchingsamples.
It has to be clarified if the skull must have got to sets ot theath and the flag must have a cross within,
i cant see a cross in the flag od my etching but my piece is definitly original.
regards

I am comparing my Panzer etch to the one posted.
The penant on mine does not have a cross in it.
Also, the bottom row of teeth are not as defined as the top set.I spent good money on this rare etch from a very well known dealer..getting that weird feeling!

Here is mine... the bottom teeth, while not as clearly defined as the top one, still show definition and separation. I have what could be called a cross in the flag, as well.

I got this from a good source and have posted it before on GDC without any questions being raised about it.

Compare the ends of the Eickhorn panel in John Z's piece to the one in question and note the Flur De Leas. John's are much more defined and not thin like the first one. This is also seen in the leaves under the skull. Not a good sign here.

Jo:

Yes, mine is a short bayonet.

I keep coming back to the lower teeth.. that, to me, is the most telling.

Ed - do you relly believe every etch should look the same? I dont think they had one etch template for all bayonets. And what do you mean with happy hour and nap time?

jo,
Notice my comment at the bottom about looking for a Walther PP pistol? That is a footnote I have automatically added to any comment I make on this site. Ed's comment about happy hour is the same thing. Click his name at the left and select "view recent posts" to verify this.
And yes, the etches should look the same. Sorry, but yours appears spurious.

Dear John, If you click the attached web page from from Wayne Techet's sale items:

http://www.vonryansexpress.com...ged-weapons-287.html

you will see a clear photograph of your current problem and with the advice you have received then judge for yourself.

Flags were and are especially important in war, not so important on the thread starter bayo it would seem?

Denny, if each etch should look the same why are there different ones in waynes book? and why did he wrote me "Dont get hung up on very small differences." ?

What counts here is that you are happy with it. If so, then enjoy it.

jo all I'm saying is there is a difference.Happy Hour in the states is usually between 4p.m.-7p.m. when a visit to the local pub is in order.when you get older you usually are taking a nap between the hours.I use to have "Retirement is one long weekend " but changed it. Big Grin It's a joke.

I agree totally with jo78.How can you enjoy a piece knowing it might not be real?Pnzer etches are very rare as well,ie,$$,.Apparently some dealers overlook red flags to boost their bottom line. Why pay for a reputeable dealers merchandise if you cant trust their expertise? And forget about resale if you have to explain a flaw or red flag. From now on,unless a piece has Waynes blessing attached to it..no deal.

Gentlemen,
So that we are not "thumping" all our chests at once, I suggest that ALL of us do a side-by-side comparison of all three of the images seen. I did this in Photoshop and examined all three. JoPo, John Z's and my own. ALL had differences in the Panzer - Crossed Bones area. Jo's and mine were a bit different than John's. In my opinion this was the most difficult etch for the Eickhorn Masters to reproduce as the detail was a significant factor and I'm sure not easily reproduced for production. I tried to illustrate this in my book. Another factor should also be taken into account. I am SURE that none of the etch producers EVER thought that we (in the hobby) would be compairing these etched dress examples close to 70 years later! You gott'a be think'n these guys are laughing at us down here.
Anyway, use the etch as ONE basis for pre-45 production and look carefully at the rest of the etch as well as the overall production standards.

I Love This Stuff
Von Ryan
