Thank you Spock for your clarification.
Surely gives us pause with our procedures with our international mailings.
I have heard an extra cautionary measure is to pack the merchandise within two boxes. One smaller box containing the merchandise inside a larger box. This method wouldn't deter or prevent a determined thief but would delay and cost time to the thief that is working against time and detection who typically is working very quickly with a razor blade and a roll of tape. With this method, the thief would slit the outer box only to find another box deeper within which at that point may discourage him any further and he would simply tape the then opening and cease his attempt.
Another New Years wish is for the daggers to be discovered and returned to Spock.
John

We send alot of merchandise off shore and the risks are high. In tough times it only gets worse. Wasn't long ago in our area a UPS driver was busted for stealing parcels that contained big diamonds from my buddys store.

USPS & Fedex ops can be intertwined. There are Fedex drop boxes at most USPS stations right out in front, it would appear that they have some kind of sub contracting deal worked out between them.
Hope this is resolved, I also hate the fact that USPS finds it necessary to plaster the insured amount right on the box.

Oh dear Spock
My first thought would be the seller, maybe they have done a few litle bits with you to gain trust. Then when you spend the big money the stuff goes missing in the post?.
Failing that it prooves that it is risky business sending this kind of stuff all over the place by post. But sometimes you just need to do it, I do hope you can claim on the insurance ok.
Wish you the best of luck

Too many hands, too many xray machines and one low life to destroy the trust in the parcel post system

I am certain it was not the seller. I have had high value items before and in this case I had not paid all the money up front. We trust each other.
He will be instigating an insurance claim from his end. Any pointers from those of you that have been through the process could help.
We are going to work this out together and with the help of the US investigating authorities I am confident that the perp will be caught. I have his dabs all over the metal bars and tape.
I will keep you all updated.

Sorry, Spock, but "join the club." Please see my tale of woe below under "General Interest." In the infamous Fogel Canadian case, he was sending broomhandles wrapped with wire, instead of swords. The problem may well lie with the seller.

An Update.
It seems thst the daggers may have gone missing in the Detroit or Memphis area according to information from UPS.
If they are offered for sale I can reveal that the SS dagger is numbered and so is the Postshultz. As we are all aware both are unique.
The SS is numbered 164451 and the Post is 919, the post has some damage to the number as if it had been dropped.
Please keep an eye out for them.
Thank you.

Tampering with the post is a felony, "mandatory sentence" serious. (an irony "post"shultz!) I'm finding this theory less than believable. Good luck on your investigation. I hope the dags surface soon Spock. (A side note, I recently learned that there is a National hotlist for stolen... flutes? .)

Hey up guys. just popping this back into the reading area. I never received my money back from the seller, he went dark after giving me a flannel of excuses. then he obviously kept the insurance money as well.
he was quite a respected collector named Mark Brooks, from the Michegan area. We chatted on the phone oevr a period of about 12 months then the number went unanswered.
I now wonder what happened to him..
happy collecting.
