Please see attached photograph showing Adolf Hitler in very jovial mood, sharing a humorous moment with an admirer who seems to have rushed the barrier to speak with him. Keeping a protective eye on the situation, but maintaining a respectful distance from the lady, is an SS mann, wearing not a service dagger, but a bayonet.

Was this practice common with the full dress uniform? Maybe someone can date the photograph from the Fuhrer's style of cap, which displays Adler only.

Uniforms are not my forte, but as I understand it the early armed SS units had only one black uniform to be used for all of their activities. Also knowing of a circa 1936 photo of LAH men walking dressed the same as pictured with what looks to me like service bayonets (not daggers). Best Regards, Fred

It looks like a Pioneer hilt dress bayonet with a dagger knot attached to the frog.

I have seen photos of Sepp Dietrich wearing a bayonet as in this photo. It was a long time ago and I don't remember where I saw it.

Billy, The photo is not as good as I would like and it could be as you say. But on the other hand, the scabbard to me is not like a solid even colored black enamel paint, and the grip plates look to be wood versus checkered plastic. So a better copy of the image might help? Having at least one or two most likely earlier SS-VT photos of them with WW I bayonets, and another I believe early SS-VT photo (that I will have to search for) of the S. 84/98 that looks like it might have a bright hilt instead of the usual German Army blued type. With the one here seeming to have a brighter hilt along with a somewhat worn blued (?) scabbard. With Best Regards, Fred

I seem to remember some kind of photo with him and a bayonet but not the bayonet type. Also thinking that I may have a few with the KS98 if memory serves me correctly. With Best Regards, Fred

The best I could do with a photo enhancement - it still looks like a somewhat worn service bayonet to me, but others can disagree which is fine with me. Best Regards, Fred

SS-TV trooper on crowd control duty. He wears the black service greatcoat with service bayonet and knot.

Here is another SS-VT photo showing what I believe is a service type bayonet being carried with the black uniform. Calling attention to their youthful robust appearance with none of them wearing glasses (etc.) that is typical with that branch of the SS in its early period. The sidearm being carried not having a deep black color handle and/or scabbard body that contrasts with the bright/silver fittings of a dagger or dress bayonet. (Which of course is just my own sense of what is in the image.) Best Regards, Fred
